I post this question to the ThumperTalk community:
Why couldn't someone of adequate welding and metallurgy knowledge simply create a subframe extension to weld-on or bolt on to the existing DRZ "E" subframe?

Surely it's possible.

I have a DRZ400E...the "E" has become the bane of my existence. I really need a subframe to carry a passenger, have a luggage rack, etc. :banghead:

I know I can buy a used, maybe not even bent, "S" subframe from ebay for $200 if I one was available so please don't point me in that direction. :bonk:

Anyone know of someone who is doing this or who wants to try?? :worthy:

Lemmeknow, I'm first in line!

Someone probably could. The problem is that it is not going to be commercially feasible. Most people are trying to lighten the bike not add to it. You could probably get a welding shop to fab something up for you.

Anything is possible, most things are not likely.

If a metal fabricator had a tubing bender capable of 180deg bends in a 6" or so radius using thin wall aluminum tube, a Tig welder and the skill to use it, the ability to make a jig for repeatable design production with decent tolerances, a good source of the raw materials needed at a decent price, business insurance to cover the inevitable pissed off client that thinks it's all the sub frame makers fault when the front wheel fell off his bike and he ran into a bus.. PLUS the time and desire to run with this project,, We are all set.. Assuming the modified part can be resold at a price that users would buy them.

This is a great idea and project for a home metal fabricator.. Someone who has the ability and equipment and cost of the project is only a second thought, as it’s a labor of interest and adventure,, not something that needs to be cost effective.

If you find a shop to take on the job,,, Post up... I'm sure you'll have others that are interested.

Summers racing makes a brace that bolts to their rack. I've got one and it's pretty solid. Not cheap though...

I welded up a little subframe extension to mount my Panaman rack on my "E" (KLX400R). 1/8" flatbar, 1/4 roundbar, a mig and drill.

No Photobucket tho, can email pics.

I've bought two for under $120 total.. One was a steal at $48.00 on fleabay.. perferct condition. And I bought another for $70 here on the list.

You just can not be in a hurry, and have to be ready to spend the cash the second you find one.

I do not think there is a Summers Racing Components company any longer.. XR Only was selling SRC stuff, but no idea if they have SRC stuff for the DRZ

I just searched for "DRZ subframe" on eBay. Here's one for $115, but adding the $26 shipping it's getting up there in price:

http://cgi.ebay.com/...sQ5fAccessories.

I've seen them go for $100 in the past. Right now the only $100 ones are off the E.

Wow! I've been looking weekly for 5 months and haven't seen anything under $115 +shipping. Are those "S" or "SM" models? I've seen the "E" going for that, that's where I plan on recouping some of my cash when I get one swapped in.

I'm ready to buy, especially for $70! Wanna sell one? :D
