The back-end of my bike kicked up on a jump and i got bucked off and it left me with my right collarbone broken. Doc said that i should where a figure 8 sling for 4-6 weeks and the bone will heal on its own. Is that true?

Well figure of eight bandages have been shown to be useless.

Will it heal? I don't know.

Will you like it if it does?

Probably not because it is signifigantly shortened and will cause the scapula to remain in a protracted positon. Protraction of the scapula is the root of most all adult shoulder problems.

Dr. Mark has fixed BOTH of mine. I had to travel 13 hours by car (each way) for the most recent one.

Ok thanks but what would you recommend for my collarbone to heal properly instead of the figure eight bandage ?

My first one was displaced and shortened, but seemed to miraculously lined up within days. I was using a figure 8. It never healed and Doc fixed it at week 20.

The second one was a little more severe, I think, and showed no inclination to line up. I was using the same figure 8 as previous. Doc fixed this one at day 5.

I have seen so many shortened and disfigured collar bones that I would think this is the norm, and I don't think a sling or a figure 8 makes any difference.

Four years ago plate and screws, broke plate, didn't know till already growing together, bothers me now but cant afford to deal with it. Also have previously broken wrist and hand with similar issues. The price we pay, but worth it! I'm 51.

Mine broke quite like yours (untrained eye :P). The surgeon pinned it as opposed to using a plate. Very small incisions and very easily removed I'm told. The fracture point has healed to be very close to the same thickness as the original bone. Leaving it unset is not nice.

The pin has small neat incisions.
The plate hss a long incision.

The reoperation rate for an unhealing fracture with the pin is about 40 percent.
The reoperation rate for an unhealing fracture with the plate is just above zero.

You all need to decide what is important in you life.

Dr Mark fixed my break and it looked similar to yours. I have absolutely NO ISSUES with my shoulder today!
You should consider having Dr Mark fix your break too.
Thank you Dr Mark. :worthy:
