ok so today my dad, who doesnt really kno anything about the different types of motocross oil, went to the local dealership and bought spectro 4 10w40 oil. i prefer to use pro honda gn4 oil. Is the spectro oil ok to use for this weekend at the track or should i jus save the spectro oil and use it for our atv and get him to go get some better racing oil(gn4)?

Spectro is a very high quality engine oil. All my family has used since day one. Never had a single problem.

ok but i didnt think it would be good for a race bike since it is not the platinum or golden type

The non synthetic oil is still very good. People always assume that just because it is not synthetic it isn't good. Everything they make is good stuff.

I would certainly prefer Spectro petroleum to Honda GN4, and Spectro blend to Honda HP4. Keep in mind however, that you can run a very slick JASO MB oil in your engine side and net a little better performance...which never hurts when you are racing! Here I would go with Redline or maybe Honda HP4M (with moly).

Spectro is only available in 10W40 and heavier. Check you owner's manual, and I think you will find it is recommending 10W30 for cooler weather (below 90 degrees F). A lighter oil will give better performance, because it won't bog your crank as much. Whatever you run, change it fairly often....

What are you running in your transmission side???? I would suggest Redline ShockProof, Maxima MTL, Honda's own HP Trans Oil, or Motul Trans Oil.

Should be good for weekend using the Spectro as others have pointed out this is a decent oil. For future I would definitely recommend high quality synthetic oil from Amsoil, Redline, or Maxima. I have used all three including the Honda oils in my CRF and prefer the Amsoil 10W-40 best (less foaming/evaporation loss) on the engine side. I also had really good results with the Redline Shockproof oil in the transmission...good stuff!!

Personally i would keep it, in my opinion its a better oil than the GN4 your running, deffinitely not gonna hurt anything by running it thats for sure

Not worth the hassle of taking it back to the shop

HP4 is a synthetic blend, so I would pick it over petroleum Spectro. In any case, I think a screaming 250 deserves something better than GN4.

If you like Honda oils, you should run slick HP4M (with moly) in your engine side, and HP4 (without moly) or HP Trans Oil in your trans side.
