Anyone have any experience with the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger?

Sounds like it could come in handy when you're "out there".

No personal experience but it has been reported that SPOT uses an old technology GPS receiver that doesn't work well under a tree canopy, which is why I passed on it. It was later reported that a newer version of SPOT was available with a more sensitive GPS receiver, or would be available soon.

there have been several threads in this forum on SPOT. Search.

Bottom line, it's a useful tool, but no substitute for proper preparation and good judgement.

I was given one as a gift, one area I ride in is quite desolate and I often ride alone, but there aren't enough satellites in my part of the world for decent coverage so it was hit and miss, a good cell phone worked better.

I just preordered the new model. I ride alone quite a bit and it, along with a cell phone and GPS offers some piece of mind.
