I was wondering whether there is a national limit to the db level a motorcycle in the UK can produce? I've just been talking to my friend about it and he seems to think theres a limit of 80db but I wasn't aware of any limit so did some google hunting. All I found were county council specific legislation about noise pollution, but nothing nation wide.

I was under the impression the only thing that the law is really bothered about is whether the exhausts say "NOT FOR ROAD USE" on them. I don't really know where I stand on this, anyone shed any light on it for me?

Cheers, Chris.

IIRC...

C&U Reg's say 95db

Lots of circuits have 98bd limits and a max of 105db is set for racing by the ACU

I looked up the C&U regs but couldn't find any reference to noise level, any chance you could point me in the right direction? And can different countys impose different regulations? or is it nation wide?

Cheers,
Chris.

The law in the UK is standard as in the EU now

The UK/Euro limit is max 96db for road use (if the manufacturer attains this they can also attain the European CE mark to put onto the pipe).
As far as MOT (roadworthiness) applies only to bikes of 3+ years old, there is no decibel meter, it is one the testers opinion.
Do not confuse construction and use regs (police road traffic law) with MOT requirements or European requirements. The police will only prosecute for a blatantly loud exhaust or it being not approved for road use.

Funnily enough i think 96db is the limit for FIM enduro and most other enduro in the UK now.

Does that mean that the exhaust has to be marked with EU approved stamp on it then? Or just that it can't be marked that it isn't road legal? Thanks for the db limit info though JimRoss.

Cheers,
Chris.

As long as it is not marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' or excessively loud (leave baffles and packing in) then you should have no issues.
