Im having trouble with a DRZ400sm I just brought home. It has been sitting for over 1 1/2 years. When I took the carb off it was extremely nasty the slide was stuck in place and had a dark brown film on the slide, needle and around the "butterfly" and under the slide at the intake. I have cleaned it twice completely taking it apart and cleaning with cleaner and air pressure. It is dying when you touch the throttle. It starts and runs perfect without touching the gas. I have only found one adjustment (i think it's the mixture screw) on it and it is 1.5 turns out.

sounds like obstructed pilot jet. very hard to clean properly. better off to just replace. maybe replace main jet too.before you do, thoroughly clean gas tank and install an in line fuel filter

If its been sitting and gas evaporated the pilot jet is for certain coated with algy, also the check valve for the accelerator pump may not free up right away. No question modern gas and storage issues is a pain in the _____

hey Dave, i think that if it's an sm, it;s still got the stock CV carb, so accelerator pump shouldn't be an issue. i've been told that Seafoam fuel treatment helps with alcohol blended fuels
