as the title says. just got the thing and it won idle w/o the choke now, didnt idle really well when i looked at it but idled somewhat...hanging, surging. pulled the carb apart, had a 50 pilot in there. swapped it out for a brand new 48 set the screw to 1.5, no luck. found a 42, cleaned it set the screw to 2 turns. fired up with choke got it to a fast "choke on" idle speed, nice and smooth, let it warm up turned choke off...dead. fuel screw arrangement is good(spring, washer, o ring). i cleaned the carb with a shot of carb cleaner( i heard carb cleaner will mess up some of the seals in these things) and lots of compressed air last night. checked for vacuum leaks, nothing leaking. lubed the hot start plunger with a little anti seize, got as much slack in it as the cable would allow. runs perfect with the choke, no bogs, doesnt die, idles smooth and will idle down nicely if i play with the idle speed screw. is it possible the actual circuit is really clogged? is there a way to thoroughly clean the circuit w/o too much carb cleaner? could the pilot screw oring just be worn out? it looks a little smashed but no cuts. throttle slide is in properly with the hole/ square edge down. im stumped.

clean out the pilot jet. You need to look through them and make sure you can see a large clean circular hole through them.

Also remove the air screw and the pilot jet. Now when you spray cleaner or air, it will want to go from the pilot to the air screw hole or vice a versa. make sure that is clean first. Then plug one of the holes with a finger and spray again through the open hole with cleaner. Look in the carb bore and you should see the cleaner spray through the small hole in the bore. Then plug the other hole and do it again. ONce that is cleaned, check the pilot and reinstall.

Also if you have been messing with the idle adjustment, set it high and work it down.

Eddie,

Forgot all about the slide plate the last 2 times I had the carb off, that was my problem the whole time. At least I know my pilot circuit is really clean now. Thanks
