I have a 2000 kx 250 and i was wondering if anyone has seen or heard of this problem and can solve it for me. the bike runs good and shifts fine if your not to hard on it however when you get to riding it hard they seem miss. When you pull the clutch in and put it in 1st its fine when you slowly let the clutch out like your going to pull out it kinda jerks and clunks around....??? it does'nt pop out of gear once its in it stays in. but like i said shifting hard it does'nt always cooperate. thanks in advance!!:worthy:

Those years KX's have a very tall 1st gear, that's where the "chug chug chug" comes from. Going down a tooth on the front sprocket will help but you'll loose a bit of top end speed.

When I'm trail riding sometimes I have to tap twice to hit first. If I don't I wind up in neutral and whacking my nuts on the gas cap. I was going to try to polish/slightly modify the shift star thingy to try to get it to skip neutral better. I just haven't had it apart yet.

When I first got my 2000 it would jump out of 4th gear and would chatter or stutter when starting out in 1st gear, I pulled the motor out and split the cases on the work bench. I bought a used transmission off E-Bay and installed it along with a new clutch pack (fiber & steel plates) and also slightly filed the fingers of the clutch basket as they were a little grooved. I haven't had a problem with the transmisson since. Good luck with yours

sounds like the same problem i have guess i'll start by pulling the clutch assy. did your tranny look bad when you pulled it or was it just 4th gear?

Except for 4th gear being worn on the shift dog groove it was in good shape, I changed out the entire tranny because the one I got from E-bay was almost brand new.

Well i pulled the clutch basket. the clutches look good the inner hub is a little worn but does'nt look bad the clutch basket is worn on the outside of the fingers is that normal? the gears on the back appear to be fine on the clutch basket. Is my problem deeper what would cause the outside of the fingers to be worn?

How's the clutch plates look? Are they all within spec and flat? Maybe you had some slippage?

there is a little bit of play (front to back) between the inner hub and the hub nut. is that normal? it goes clutch basket, washer, inner hub, washer nut correct?
