Water pump seal failing?

1999 KDX 220

So I've done the searching and what not, but still have one burning question. My sight glass is showing a little foggy, but when I drain the oil it's not milky.

I'm not sure where the water is coming from. Could it be a head gasket? Just recently did the top end. Does the water pump cover start leaking out the 'weep hole' if the seal is failing?

Just trying to get some information before I go tearing into this thing. I need to get it fixed ASAP. :banghead:

Thanks all

You know, it could be just the site glass.. If your not losing fluids and you oil isn't milky it's possible some moisture got in between the glass, I don't believe it's single pane, everytime your motor heats up it will get foggy. This happened to my sons 65..

Well, I just drained the trans oil and it's 'milky'. So I'm getting water from somewhere. The bike hasn't been ridden in any moisture. I have washed it a couple of times. The weep hole is not leaking at all. Could the water be coming from the cylinder base gasket? head gasket? or water pump seal (even if the weep hole is NOT leaking)?

Thanks for the quick replies as I'm trying to get this fixed by the weekend.

Just an FYI, ya'll may want to check your crankcase hose and where it ends at. Make sure the end of it points down and isn't in a place where water can funnel into it.

Heard from a very experienced KDX rider/racer/mechanic today that the water pump seal failure WILL NOT cause the water to leak to the trans oil, ONLY will run out the weep hole. The space between the two seals is 'dead air'.

It looks like my issue was/is caused by the vent hose not being in the best position.

Your "very experience kdx rider/racer/mechanic" is mistaken. A failure of the oil seal behind the water pump impeller causes water to be pushed past the seal into the transmission. It's a very common failure on these bikes. Mine was NOT leaking from the weep hole, but it WAS pushing water into the transmission. 30 minute job to pull the covers and replace the seal and bearing. Same story on BOTH my KDX's, and a quick search will show you many other people who have had and fixed the same problem.

Just FYI

He's not MY "very expericenced KDX rider/racer/mechanic". But I do take his word very seriously.

Anyways, I have seen all the search results, done all that. My issue is fixed, and it wasn't my seal. Thanks for all the help.

Cool. I'd keep an eye on it though. Those seals are quite prone to failure, and regardless of what you've been told it WILL dump water into the transmission. You can check out a parts schematic and see how/why. It's all quite obvious once you've torn into it one time.

Of course, dumping water into the transmission vent line will do that too, as you've found out! Hope it turns out that was your only problem!
