Does anyone know if you can still get back in the country with a drivers license and birth certificate? I have been asked to fill in on a team but I never have gotten around to getting a passport.

Thanks

We just went down on October 10th. My friend did not have his passport he gave them a drivers license and a Birth certificate. The guard made a joke about Brian having to stay in Mexico and then waived us through. So it is up to you I am sure they could hassle you and it could take awhile but you will get home.

It ultimately depends on how lenient the border patrol agent is... bring your birth certificate and driver's license. I very much doubt a US citizen will ever be denied access back into the US without a passport provided you have a birth certificate and driver's license.

Just for the record, I had a new passport in hand less than two weeks after submitting the application. I called, played nice and they ultimately expedited it for me. It's amazing what can be accomplished by simply being nice...

You will probably in the worst case esenario spent a couple of hours waiting to get cleared at the border. Use your gringo accent and your nice blond hair (if you still have some)to get you clear.

apply tomorrow
use expedited service
make photocopies of the application
keep an original of your birth certificate

Cutting it short from getting it in time even with expedited service (web site says 2-3 weeks). If it doesn't come in on time, show original birth certificate, driver's license, copy of application, and online tracking stuff.

I've crossed as have others without my passport since it was required. Apply for the expedited passport tomorrow - you are going to need it anyway. If it doesn't come in on time, you can show the immigration inspector that you have one coming through the system.

Also, I used to cross all the time with an expired passport as proof of citizenship and the inspectors never said anything. Just a thought if you have an expired passport.
