Picked up an all but new 08 85 this weekend and took it to the practice track on Saturday, we set his sag and started riding. Pulls like a beast. worked on starts to get used to the clutch and where it engages. The bike took off with a lot of force. On Sunday we took it to the track. Started it and let it warm up. Seemed to be idling a bit low so I turned it up just a quarter turn. Got up to the line and he was at the gate, full throttle, gate dropped and the bike just lumbered out of the gate. The first one i just thought it was my son being nervous and it being a new bike for him. He had a second class only 2 races later and same thing. Just wondering what i should be looking at to resolve this. Once it got going it was great but out the gate you could walk past him till he got going.
Bogging bad on starts

Needle 2nd from top and a 138 main will get you close. How heavy is the rider, best gearing is around a 14/52. Starting in 2nd gear you have to have it pinned and slip the clutch first 20 feet or so.

When you adjusted the idle did you also adjust the air screw? How many turns out is the air screw?

Go to any mx school and look at the 85 riders if they're inexperienced you'll see the Kawasaki's falling on their face doing starts more often than the other brands. They're usually too rich form the dealer, but adjust in baby steps and get him consistent and you'll be there. A BR9EIX is a pretty good plug to use also.
