It's obvious by my obsessive posts on Thumpertalk that I simply can't be without internet access (or my favorite message board)... I was hoping to get set-up with mobile broadband for my laptop, but am not sure if there's a reliable service with coverage in the Northern part of Baja.

My AT&T cell coverage in Baja is usually very good, but not sure how their mobile broadband service is.

Anyone have suggestions?

From my past experience very expensive. And that was just emails to my phone.

Tell me about it - I had a $900 phone bill after the '07 1000  I forgot to remove my phone from our SPOT messenger service and it was getting dinged with messages (when they were actually sent) about every 10-15 minutes :) On top of that, I was naively checking work emails and sending email to family members from my phone. Thankfully, work picked up the tab on that one.

There's gotta be an affordable Intl mobile broadband plan out there somewhere...

$20 per MB!
I left my laptop streaming a spot link for hours at the 500! It was my work aircard, Verison. I typically never see the bill and no one complained from ISD so dodged that bullet.
I hear Iphone/ATT will have a Mexico plan soon if not now.
WIFI if you can.. but won't you be busy on the bike?

Oh, well I was thinking of updating my Facebook and Twitter status when I get to each pit and checkpoint :smirk: Think my laptop will survive the summit?

most of the major hotels in Ensenada have wi fi. Iam sure you know this. When in san felipe the resturant at playa de oro about 5miles north of town has wi fi. We always put some one there for the race with a prerunner.
If you are in LLANO COLORADO for the race go over to our commvee for class1 (4x4 motorhome classc) next to bfg and ask to for the code for our wi fi. pm me if your intrested.

take care

For the 500 last your we used a tel cel air card (3 of them) it was very$$$$ and very slow but it did work.

It's very good.

However;
I run a AT&T wireless adapter (like this one) as it takes your cell sim card and will enable you to use it for broadband wireless.
It works great... and is pretty fast in comparison. Even those sites that rely heavily on Java based applications. I'm not sure the actual cost, as work pays for it. But it's enabled for Mexico use, which saves on cost overall.

Or if you have a BB, or other device that's able to TETHER... it's a good solution to a quick need.

That's precisely the route I'm going to take. I have a work issued Blackberry with a killer international plan so I'm going to use my phone as a modem essentially.

Good idea! ... the USB thinga-ma-job is a great item too. If the phone breaks, or is too dead (and you have to wait for it to charge a bit)... the USB item is a great backup. I have both available (again, because of work) and both have their own 'cell' number attached to the SIM. I've found the USB attachment works a bit easier (less cords, or whatever. Just plug it in and go!) and it's cheap.

I can recall a guy that got a $60,000.00 phone bill from downloading movies while in Europe.
