I just aquired a 2002 RM 250. The bike was just rebuilt, but when the previous owner went to start it he could not get spark. He said he had given up and just wanted out. This bike is extremely clean and well taken care of for its age. So now I am trying to diagnose the problem. I first went through and checked all connections and everything looked goog. Then, I pulled the bike apart and found a silver 1'' X 1" silver box that had some corrosion around the plug. This box was under the fuel tank and is not the CDI. I cleaned it and still nothing. Anyone have any Ideas?

Also, I found a complete wiring harness off of a 2001 RM250 that includes: CDI, Stator, Recifier, and coil. Do you know if that would work on my bike.

Thanks in advance

If you got a good enough deal on the bike, just bring it to a dealership.

Otherwise just start at the beginning of the electrical system, verify that it's a good part and then keep moving on until you are at the spark plug. Personally I would not bother buying that '01 ignition, it might be perfect, but fixing yours could be cheaper.

No, I have not. Would that cause no spark?

I got the bike for 350. It came with 2 new tires, and all new plastics still in the bag. What do you think a shop would charge to diagnose something like this. Thanks

I picked up an 03 rm250 that had the same thing, no spark. After checking everything on the bike it ended up being the wire harrness at the CDI connection. Got a very clean used one on e-bay for $25.00 and it fired off on the second kick. You better check around on the web, but I think an 01 and 02 system has some changes. The plugs on the wire harrness I think is differant. I may be wrong, but I remember looking at it, I know an 03 won't work on an 02 (plugs are changed). Have a good day.:p

It could cause no spark or a very weak one. The end of you cable might be corroded to trim it a bit and buy a new boot and see.
