My son is getting a KX65 for Christmas and I want to avoid upsetting the neighbors. What would be some cheap, easy ways to quieten down a KX65. I know that keeping the silencer packed is a good idea, but does packing material make a difference? Would a FMF spark arrester be quieter than the OEM silencer?

We have the FMF on our '02 KX65. I would say at full song it is still quieter then most weed eaters I hear. The nice thing is the sound does not carry very far at all.

You can only make it so quite.. basically, your aftermarket silencers are the best... "the ones that actually reduce noise" not the ones for more horsepower or whatever... a offraod pipe, basically a pipe with the spark arrestor is the best thing... if those are to expensive or what not, I think the most common thing is house insulation.... but once any packing gets oily, it only gets louder from there... =)

Yeah, I figured the FMF spark arrestor would be quieter. I've heard of using regular fiberglass insulation for silencer packing. Back in the day we used steel wool. Are some packing materials quieter than others?

Alot of noise comes from the pipe since it's so thin. You may want to consider a pipe guard. Other additions would be a dB Snorkel or a dB Dawg, two aftermarket devices used to quiet down the bikes. I like the dB Dawg since it's so small.

I've run an FMF turbin core and it's quieter - it's pricey and probably not quiet enough for your worries. Good suggestions on the db - snorkle (or try 6-inch of innertube first) and wrap your pipe

$7 FMF for smokers.

Like makKX250 said, the noise doesn't travel far with those 65's. That's one of the ways how I can tell what moto it is, cuz you can't hear those things on the other side of the track. lol

My kids used to have Suzuki DS-80s that were very loud with the stock silencer. I found some answer silencers for a 125 that I was able to cut down and fit with not too much trouble. I took off the stock silencer and shopped around for something that was close on mounting and remarkably, on the 125 silencer, I just had to cut down the input pipe several inches and make a mounting tab extension. They worked great and made the bikes so quiet, that my lawnmower was louder than their bikes. The length of the silencer makes a big difference. The longer the silencer, the quieter it will be. You may be able to extend the stock silencer if you find one that is similar in diameter, but just longer. A turndown tip on the end will also help a little bit.

Was my first bike. :smirk:

I used to rip out in the back yard in a neighborhood made up of 40x150 lots. :ride::busted:

I take it the turn down tip will redirect the noise and help?

I run the gnarly pipe and an FMF QII silencer and I'm quieter than just about any racebike out there; I don't ride where there's anyone to hear me so I haven't tired this thing; but if I rode near neighborhoods I get it.

The KX 65 is actually very quiet as long as the packing is kept fresh, even with the OEM silencer. There's probably more chain slap and intake noise than exhaust noise.

Interesting concept here. For yard use it would be nice to take the DB down a couple more points. My neighbors dont seem to mind the dirt bikes but would probably appreciate the attempt at making the bikes as quiet as possible.
