Joel Smets goes electric in Denmark (Husqvarna Quantya Electric Motocrosser)

NEWS Tuesday 27th October 2009
Five times World motocross Champion Joel Smets is going to participate in the world’s first international Enduro race for zero pollution motorcycles – International Eco Enduro – taking place under the United Nations Climate change conference (COP15) in Copenhagen this December.
International Eco Enduro is the world's first international, enduro and MX race for electric motorcycles and the purpose of the race is to show the world that mechanical sports can be environmentally responsible and is prepared to seek new ways and innovative solutions.
"I think it's an incredibly exciting project," says Joel Smets, who have had the opportunity to try one of the Quantya motorcycles that are used during the race in Denmark. "I have been in contact with the Belgian Quantya importer and tried to ride the motorcycles. It was a very good experience for me and there is no doubt that the electric motor racing is an important part of the future. "
"I am also double exited to come to Denmark," the Belgian former world champion continues "I was in transit in Denmark for a few months ago with my family and that included a visit to a beach south of Køge, it was a really nice place "smiles Joel Smets, knowing that in the days from 10th-13th December when the International Eco Enduro takes place, the bathing temperature will be somewhat lower…
However it is a coincidence that Joel Smets visited that part of Denmark, because part of the International Eco Enduro takes place just a few kilometers from there, as the first training sessions will be run on Baron Ivan Reedtz-Thotts property “Strandgård” south of Faxe December 10th, followed by races on both “Strandgård” and Faxe quarry December 11th, races in the klinte forest December 12th and finals in Copenhagen December 13th.
Among the ambassadors for the International Eco Enduro Is: Brian Jorgensen: Former Motocross GP rider and now national motocross coach in Denmark. John Nielsen: World history first Danish winner of the 24-hour Le Mans. Robbin Harms: Denmark's best Road Racing rider with a number of years participation in MotoGP and now a part of the 2009 Supersport World Championship.
