which throttle cable do I use?? yz400f w/ 450 carb??

Recommended Posts

Hey guys Im new to the site and have been searching threads for my questions with no avail. I just bought a 99 yz400f and its in great shape. the seller stated he bought a "450 carb" off ebay and put it on the bike to help with performance and starting issues. The bike runs decent, but the carb doesnt feel 100% tuning wise. I noticed today when looking over the bike, he was still using the stock 99 throttle cable which looks too short for this carb and the cables are frayed so I need two new cables. I need to know what year throttle cables do I need for this application to work. He said the 450 carb came off a quad 450. Also is there a base line where I can set the 450 carb and go from there? thanks guys and gals in advance! Very much appreciated!

here are pics of the carb. can anyone tell me the specifics on this carb and how to set it up, IE: where to set the red knob, like how many turns out just to get me started. thanks again I do appreciate it.

I would try a yz 426 cable and see if that will work. My stock 426 cable is a few inches too long because I have 2inch risers and 4inch tall bars, and the cable still fits with enough play. Also try the jetting stickey at the top of the page. Lots of people have tried different things with carbs and posted their results.

You may want to fit the hot start plunger too, the threaded hole on the front left of the carb when looking down on it from above. Just next to your thumb in this pic:

Now is a good time to fit all the bits for the cable operated hot start and mount it on your front brake perch (CR450F style). :bonk:

ok thanks for the quick replies! Now two things, which cable do I need to get to make this work on my bike? And can i use my old hot start set up and just plug the port on the carb? thanks

I dare say that '04 YZ throttle cables could be used to allow it to work with your bike, tho', i have never seen YFZ carb in the flesh so i ain't 100% sure if it is possible!

As for the hot start, you wouldn't be able to use your plunger (you would struggle to pull it on, as the bottom of the tank might be in the way - if there's even clearence under the tank to pull it up?).

You will have to fit a YZ style hotstart plunger and cable and have a remote hotstart on the bars i'd guess

update. i messed with the bike all day today. I put the stock carb back on which is jetted to the fmf header and air filter with no lid. I cleaned the stock one and put it back on and the bike seems to run good. a little bit of popping at low rpms but other than that its good. so now I can get the right throttle cable for my bike and sell this 450 carb. any idea how much I can get for it? Thanks for all of your help guys!!
