I think he's well beyond the washer stage.

I concur. And soon he will really be scaring the crap out of you!

I drilled four 5mm holes in a cross pattern around the main hole. This let the bike come onto the pipe a little. I also repacked the silencer. Man, that quieted down the bike a lot. I don't think it had ever been changed.
Next to do, change out the front sprocket to a stock 13.
Nice pic, Dirtdad!.

It literally has as linear a powerband now as a 300. hehe
He rode with a friend yesterday with a KX65, stock, and did very well riding with him. He stayed with him the whole time, there's just no explosion of power when the bike comes on the pipe. I have a 1000 ft straight that he can get into 5th on and it just pulls steady the whole time.
My nephew just got an 02 RM85. Can the same washer mod be done on the RM85?

He's coming off a CR70 just learning to use the clutch. He's thirteen and quite tall for his age with not a whole lot of riding experience. I think he will just be riding around a 20 acre field and maybe some woods. The bike he just bought has V-Force reeds and a FMF Power Core 2 silencer. Everything else looks stock. I'm just looking for ways to make the transistion a little smoother for him.
Thanks.

I will put it this way, if there is a backing that the pipe seats on, then you can put a washer in there as long as you can find one big enough to seat in the flange.

Thanks.
I'd also see if I could borrow a manual clutch trails bike for the first few lessons since he's got limited experience on a bike.

I did the same with my son's KX65 and it worked great also. I just wasn't sure if the same could be done with the RM85. I read somewhere that you could not put a flywheel weight on the RM85.

In that case, for the type of riding you're planning to do and the rider, I'd seriously consider trying to trade the bike for something else. Maybe a XR/CRF/KLX/TT-R 100-125? I'd be afraid that 85 will be a handful for him.

9/16" ID was good to start, no hit. It did let a good bit of unburnt, burnt mix stay behind though. Kind of makes jetting a little finicky. The 4 holes I drilled are likely to be similar to the 3/4" ID washer. The way the mix had built up behind the washer, the holes helped.
I will likely be leaving the washer in thru the wet winter, then taking it out completely in the spring, adding a FWW.

Well my boy turned the corner and decided that he does like to ride the RM more than the XR50. I have the FFW on the bike and a washer with a 9/16th hole. No hit as you can see from the video. I just drilled out the washer another 1/8th and blipped around in the driveway and it was a noticeable difference without being over the top.
Devin on his RM65
I also have vid of him racing a XR50... I guess all I can say is race Honda 50s for fun, you can't compete with the other 50s :)
