Thought I would post some pics of my son riding. He's taken to it pretty well. Thinking about drilling some smaller holes around the main hole in the washer.? Not quite ready to pull it alltogether, but he could use a little more.

It's great watching your child progress on bikes, I know it tickles me to see mine doing the things they do.

Hey Charlie, haven't heard from in quite some time.

Yeah, kind of skeers me, too. :busted:

Yank the washer, give him a large open field to get used to it, half an hour later you'll be even more scared and he'll be out running you.
I think he's well beyond the washer stage.

I concur. And soon he will really be scaring the crap out of you!

I would remove the washer, but it's coming into winter and the wet season. It will be enough to handle on the slick roots and rocks without the big hit.

I drilled four 5mm holes in a cross pattern around the main hole. This let the bike come onto the pipe a little. I also repacked the silencer. Man, that quieted down the bike a lot. I don't think it had ever been changed.

Next to do, change out the front sprocket to a stock 13.

Nice pic, Dirtdad!.

will a 14 tooth sprocket fit on the 65, and has anyone done that? will the bike still work with that gearing?

According to JT Sprockets, yes. http://www.jtsprocke...sel_uid=1215&p=

I don't see why it wouldn't.

do the washer first, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. My son came off a PW 80. I see no need for anything other mods at this point.

It literally has as linear a powerband now as a 300. hehe

He rode with a friend yesterday with a KX65, stock, and did very well riding with him. He stayed with him the whole time, there's just no explosion of power when the bike comes on the pipe. I have a 1000 ft straight that he can get into 5th on and it just pulls steady the whole time.

My nephew just got an 02 RM85. Can the same washer mod be done on the RM85?

Probably. What's his riding experience been? Can you tell us more about him and the riding you plan to do? There may be better ways to tame it that will benefit his experience and the areas you ride in.

He's coming off a CR70 just learning to use the clutch. He's thirteen and quite tall for his age with not a whole lot of riding experience. I think he will just be riding around a 20 acre field and maybe some woods. The bike he just bought has V-Force reeds and a FMF Power Core 2 silencer. Everything else looks stock. I'm just looking for ways to make the transistion a little smoother for him.

Thanks.

I will put it this way, if there is a backing that the pipe seats on, then you can put a washer in there as long as you can find one big enough to seat in the flange.

Look into a flywheel weight and see if you can find a stock expansion pipe.

I'd also see if I could borrow a manual clutch trails bike for the first few lessons since he's got limited experience on a bike.

Ok my vid is pretty boring... I need to update and edit a bit more. Here is my son on an RM65 with the FFW and the washer mod. This is his 2nd 30 min run and as you can hear not much of a hit. = happy kid and dad. :ride:

I did the same with my son's KX65 and it worked great also. I just wasn't sure if the same could be done with the RM85. I read somewhere that you could not put a flywheel weight on the RM85.

That might be. I know the KX85 you can, and for the small KX line (60-100) uses the same FWW, and so does most of the RMs but not the 85. Perhaps that's why?

In that case, for the type of riding you're planning to do and the rider, I'd seriously consider trying to trade the bike for something else. Maybe a XR/CRF/KLX/TT-R 100-125? I'd be afraid that 85 will be a handful for him.

I brought My son's KX65 home today and did the washer mod. I made 2 washers, one with 1/2 inch hole and the other with a 3/4 inch hole. I installed the one with a 1/2 ID and it took all of the hit out of the bike. When he gets the bike at Christmas we'll see how long it takes to move up to the 3/4 inch ID washer. Thanks for the info on this mod.

9/16" ID was good to start, no hit. It did let a good bit of unburnt, burnt mix stay behind though. Kind of makes jetting a little finicky. The 4 holes I drilled are likely to be similar to the 3/4" ID washer. The way the mix had built up behind the washer, the holes helped.

I will likely be leaving the washer in thru the wet winter, then taking it out completely in the spring, adding a FWW.

Update:

Well my boy turned the corner and decided that he does like to ride the RM more than the XR50. I have the FFW on the bike and a washer with a 9/16th hole. No hit as you can see from the video. I just drilled out the washer another 1/8th and blipped around in the driveway and it was a noticeable difference without being over the top.

Devin on his RM65

I also have vid of him racing a XR50... I guess all I can say is race Honda 50s for fun, you can't compete with the other 50s :)
