Well a friend brought over his 06 XR650 the other day and said he messed it up and asked if I could fix it. Well, He hollowed out his exhaust pipe to get more sound (Harley Rider) and now the bike will hardly run even with the choke wide open. I'm not very knowledgable with this bike and I have no books on it. Does someone have a rough idea what jet kit or jets would be a good start? I don't think he changed the air filter. It looks stock. Any other info would be appreciated.

From the info you gave me...

He took a stock bike (in borderline lean mixture condition) and increased the air flow significantly.

Now it acts like the bike is starving for gas. Sounds normal. When you chance the air flow through the motor, you need to adjust the fuel mixture (get new jets).

There are a lot of threads on rejetting, try reading a few and asking questions if you don't understand.

Go here http://jetsrus.com/main_page.htm and click the link on "How to Rejet". Good info there.

This 650 is an "L" and I found out that he removed the smog pump and the spark arrestor from the exhaust. At this point I'm unfamiliar with a lot of this bike. I've been looking for jet kits and I find the typical Dyna Jet kit that includes an adjustable needle jet and other kits that don't have the needle but include a slow jet. ***? can someone make sense of this for me? I know that the bike has stock jets in it with a 152 main, and i think a 58 slow jet, and a non adjustable needle. Not exactly sure what kit to buy. Maybe I don't need a needle jet. hmmmm

Well start by doing yourself and your neighbors a favor and get a baffle in that muffler. Without the baffle, it is so unnecessarily loud, it's ridiculous. Also, without back pressure, the bike actually runs worse - much worse in some cases.

If you need a new muffler, just ask. People give them away here all the time. You'll just need to send them shipping costs first.

After the exhaust is fixed, try buying some new jets and put them in. No kit needed. No new spring or needle necessary.

But hey, *** do I know, ask anyone.

Kind of hard to remove the spark arrester from a Krizman style pipe. I would imagine that he just removed the baffle. In that case as long as there are no holes it's still an arrester. The active component is a little turbine thing that sits about a foot from the end of the pipe.

+1.

He still stands a good chance of nuking the engine if he keeps riding it with such a lean mixture, however. A lot of people have been unnecessarily burning up their RFVCs this season. It would be disappointing to see another one.

you will be fine with the dynojet kit, use the dynojet 165 main, carb spring and get a 55 pilot from a honda dealer and or jetsrus dot com, grind off the adjusting prevention tab on the air fuel screw then turn it in until it seats and run it back out 2 1/4 turns. Toss the stock filter - tell him to go get a UNI filter for it. If it is sound he wants along with performance get a FMF powercore. Way better performnace than a hacked on stock pipe. This will return the XRL to a good running bike.

as for his HD. Power commander from fuelmotousa and a set of vance and hines pipes and install. Power commander comes premapped and is a brainless installtion. as are the pipes. however so many HD riders take it to the stealer to have this done and get raped. But! they get to walk around in chaps and grunt at each other....

I bet he cut the whole end off...

I believe your right Motorsprtman. He removed the baffle at the tail end of the pipe. I commute with another guy who has a 650L and he did the same thing to his bike and it has a "pingy" sound to it. "not natural" for sure. Good advice about the jets. Thank you, I will run down to the stealer after work and try to pick a couple of those jets and give them a try. As for the HD he's on his own! I'm not touchin that one. But your right about the Vance & Hines. Best "Loud" sounding pipes out there I think.

The dealer may not have the 165 DJ main (although some do) drill the slide vacuum holes (not the one ion the middle for the needle) to 5/32. at least a 158 main jet and 55 pilot, air screw out 2 1/4 turns. On cold starts gas on full choke, no throttle, press the button - as soon as it start half choke, maybe a blip or so and your ready to ride. A nice after market piipe really finished it off nice and don't forget to open the top of the airbox up and toss the paper filter for a foam / high flow unit.

Well I ran down to the Steeler and got a 165 main and a 55 slow jet and put them in. Worked like a charm! Your right about the exhaust pipe though. I will tell him to get it and the air filter replaced. It sounds like Crap! But WOW does this bike have some power! I wasn't ready for the shift into second gear. I about flew off the back side of the bike. I ran through all the gears and the bike seemed to perform well at all levels of throttle. Very fun bike! My ride is a DR-Z400s and I'm very impressed with the XR650L. Thasnk you for the help and maybe I'll chat with you guys on the DRZ board. Thanks again motorsptman.
