Alright here is the deal. My beloved '01 XR650R motor is toast. Crank and cylinder are fried. Not sure what happened. I really don't want to put anymore money in the bike. So I'm thinking it's worth more parted out. I want to get a 450X.

The bike is plated for Calif. and has ton's of upgrades. What is it worth?

Heres a pict of the bike.

I really hate to get rid of it, I wanted to keep this and have a 450X too. Just want to get some ideas for pricing before I part it out.

Sorry to hear. That's a nice looking bike.

I just guessing now...as is...$1500-1700?

I think it would sell for that in CA

If you part it out, I'd like first chance at the frame.

There was a guy selling a fully rebuilt 650R motor in the redlands craigslist a couple weeks ago. He was asking $1400. Might be sold by now.

Hold on!
are you for sure the motor is toast? What happened? Signs and symptoms.
Where in CA are you? I know a great mechanic in SF bay area.
The bike in the pic is certainly worth a few bucks to get back in shape.

If you are a patient man...parting out can pay off, however, in this economy, I would not want to be selling anything, especially used bike parts. With that being said... I want first crack at the tires/wheels.

Based on the pic... with the motor toast...in this economy...with a CA plate...
low $1200 high $ 1800... Better to part it out.

Or, this is what I would do

Call on every used non plated XR650r in CA, low ball offer every bike that looks clean. You should find one around 2K... maybe less. Cannibalize every part you can use off the new bike (motor of course) and put it on your bike. Part out everything you did not use off the new bike on various internet auctions. when all is said and done you might just be out a few hundred to 1K depending how well you remain patient mailing bike parts.

I just got done spending $800 on a new top end for my plated 2000 XR... it stung a bit, but it was worth it the minute I threw a leg over the seat when I got it back.
I plan on taking my XR650r out for a spin around town in 20 years and see everyone staring at the legend of a bike the XR650r will become!

Plated R in CA?

Schmuck you sell it to will probably not be able to plate it, bike you buy will probably need to be already legal (not converted)

I am interested in the whole bike, and would say sell it to someone in CA. I don't believe transferring it will be a problem. I just transferred a couple 600s. I would say it is worth at least $1400, maybe more. I agree it is a pain to sell anything now, and nearly everyone will low ball you. Parting it out may get you more, but from experience I would say it is risky to do on ebay and probably not worth the extra trouble for the extra $'s you may get.

If I was in your situation, I'd slap a new motor in it before buying a 450X.
I like my X, but I'm in love with my pig--that might have come out wrong.

That's my engine. I still have it. Let me know if you want to buy it. It was rebuilt by Blais and has 0 hours on it.

That's my engine again. I've listed it in several places. I still have it.

I have all the paperwork including the bill from Blais and the list of OEM parts used.

I'm actually thinking about keeping it and building up a second 650R from spare parts, so if you end up parting your bike out please let me know. I'm interested in the frame if it was plated prior to 2004. I also am interested in the wheels, swingarm, radiators, etc.

Basically, either buy my engine from me or sell me most of your rolling chassis.

Great posts by all(almost). Two things that will not be sold with the bike are the wheels and the Baja Designs light.. Both of them can fit the 450X. I do have the original wheel set and a ton of other parts.

As of right now BBM is trying to find a engine for me and depending on price I will see what I am going to do with this bike. As I said I really love this bike and would love to have both bikes. The 650 is a great all around bike and the 450X will be my Baja fun bike. The crazy trails I ride with Cameron and Baja Bound Moto dictate that my old rear end get a 450 as the Pig is too hard to negotiate the single track these guys take me on. I road Colton Udalls 450X and fell in love with it, almost didn't give it back to him.

I'll keep your PM's and let everyone know what I do with it.

ThunderChicken wish I had your engine before I rebuilt this one. Would of been nice to have a spare.

Thanks for the responses. They have been helpful.

HA! Keeping the wheels and light... good move!
Your bike looks sweet! pure Baja! even with the knackered motor. That just tells me it got used! You killed an XR, not easy to do. Bragging rights?
Have you been in the motor yet to get a more difinitive look at what it will need? Might as well yank it out and poke around. Im interested in what happened.
