Hi fells.1st post
I bought myself a 02 XR 650L for my 50th birthday recently.:bonk:
So far Im loving except throwing my tired old legs over it.:foul:
Lucky Im 6,2

Couple of newbie questions.
How do you turn the headlight off when the ignition is on?
Does it have a steering lock? It seems to have an extra position that doesnt do anything but you cant pull the key out while its there, accessories perhaps?

Is there anywhere you can get online manuals for these?
Anything else about these I should know?

A bit about my bike .Its road lic,low klms, nice clean and stock except for a Staytune muffler.
Its got Pirelli M/T,not sure if they are original

Thanks Rosco

First off, Welcome to the group this are great bikes.
1. Check your suspension sag setting and re spring if needed. The front end has very light springs stock.
2. In the US there is a steering lock, the bars have to be turned all the way over to the key side to get it to lock.
3. Of course you can turn the head light off with the ignition on, after some mods. Stock the head light it powered when the key is on and only turns off when the start button is pushed.
4. Do a search on this forum for an online manual they are out there.
5. Tires are not stock, and that is a good thing, I run Pirelli's and love them.

PS that is a great birthday present!

q1 the headlight is wired to be on all the time to shut it off and the talight interrupt the ground wires with a switch
q2 yes it has a stering lock but you must turn the front wheel to the far left i think, i never use it.

I would ask why you want the light to be off? I have a hard time understanding why you might want it off.

To save electricity? Maybe switched to send signals in Morse Code?

It's more common to upgrade the stator and see how many lights you can put on the bike.

It would be handy if the battery is dying and you want to conserve some juice for a start in soft soil where you cant push start it.

Even my old Volvo had a switch to turn the daytime run lights of.

Let us know where you tied in your switch as I am about to put in a bypass switch for my headlight for the purpose of switching to a low watt/amp LED set up so I can recoup some needed wattage for my heated jacket liner and gloves.

I got to find the right kind of switch 1st. Ill probably go with a sliding type switch ,rather than a toggle type.
Im think about fixing it to crossbar on the handle bars,if I can get a switch to sit there.

Must be cold where you are
