Hey fellas i have an Aussie XR400R which to me looks to have pretty much the same wiring as a 650L so thought i should post here because US XR400R's dont come with indicators as standard

PROBLEM: When using a 21w flasher only the fronts flash, and also flash fast. If i swap the grey & grey/white wires from the relay only the rears will flash and flash fast too.

What i have in there now: 4 x indicators with 21w bulbs. 3 pin relays off 3 different bikes which are all 21/23w x 2. Unfortunately i dont have the honda one but i assume its exactly the same as the ones i have.

Now.. what i dont get is the following. I use a 'generic' china 3 pin flasher that is variable load (8w-21w) and they work! they all work and flash at the correct rate.. however these flashers suck and always go bad.. now it flashes the rears at normal rate than the front will start flashing after about 4 seconds.

So now im in need of some help.. My theory is, if there was a broken wire or bad ground that they would not work wit the generic flasher but they do. all 4 blinkers are new and have new bulbs too (they came with 10w bulbs which i thought was the problem but obviously its not)

Now WHAT THE... is going on?
If the rectifier/regulator was bad, why would it work with the china jobbie?

And to top it off i pulled apart the handlebar switch to clean/check it and a plastic piece fell out and i have no idea where it goes :foul:

sounds to me you have ground problems or better said a lack of ground; clean all ground conections to the frame and to the lights; i don't know if you have a battery or not but if you do run some extra 16ga copper ground wires to the light from the neg on the battery in sted of using the frame (steel very poor conductor of elc. especially when coroded.)

Try 4 23 Watt bulbs with the first (non-"china") flasher. Or you could install an LED flasher that doesn't rely on load draw to make it flash.

i had flasher problems and the LED flasher unit helped me alot, mine were flashing wierd too, would speed up as engine RPMs went up. but you should check grounds also. The led flashers are like $18 here, not sure about your area

So you can use an LED flasher with NON-LED lights? never knew that

i actually have 23w bulbs in there and the flashers say 21/23w x 2. however it does exactly the same thing whether i use the 10w or 23w bulbs

I might get an LED flasher off ebay and see if that works

But are all the bulbs 23W? Because I've seen it where just one bulb is lower (say 21W) and it'll cause flasher problems.

Definitely all 4 are 23w. i had 10w previous in all 4 as that's how they came. So i thought my problem was my flasher so ive been trying to get a 10w x 2 flasher just Like this one but the jackass sent me a 23w one and wont reply to my emails.
Now i went to the bike shop and they have 23w bulbs that were physically the same size as the 10w which was great as i though it would fix the problem but nooooooo... same shit

i MIGHT have stumbled across something that may solve all my problems. WIll investigate a bit further to see

Does your 650Ls have 3 pin or 2 pin flashers?

Ok im bored at work and decided to draw a pic of my thinking

Type 1 is what a normal 3 pin flasher should be connected like (reference from CB250 wiring diagram). These are the flasher types i have been trying on my bike.
My bikes wiring setup (XR400) is like type 2, SO... what im thinking is that type of flasher i have been trying wont work in my bike and honda has some gay ass dual output flasher that you can only buy from them. which is $90 btw

that is... if my decoding of wiring diagrams are correct
Can anyone confirm this?
