I'd say the first step is getting your hands on a manual. If you look you might be able to find one you can download.

The flywheel will need to come off for sure.

I got the manual, looked it over twice. Kinda not sure!?#

I know that tearing the whole entire engine apart would get it done,:foul:

But, I want to know if you can just take the fly wheel off and change the seal...

Anyone done this before on a 650R?

you know when you look at the microfiche it looks as if it maybe inserted from outside of case, if thats true then with crankshaft in it would be tight but possible??? I know illustration of a microfiche arent the best to figure out how something goes together but sometimes close. Seal is like $6 91203-MBN-671

I would assume you could pull the seal after pulling the flywheel, anyways i would take it apart and try. JUST to make sure you don't have to split the cases, but i think the better question is WHY did the seal blow? I searched the forums and only seen 1 other post about this on an R, so its not all that common. Do you properly fill the bike after oil changes? Is the Crankcase breather tube blocked or kinked? All these could cause failures of seals or maybe it just gave out:banghead:

yeah and also check for grooves on crankshaft when seal is out. ive had flywheel seals go on other bikes but just barely leaking and nothing more than 1/2oz of fluid or so between oil changes.

Started to leak out of the cover after a very hot (106') August ride.
We were at Pine valley/ Corral Canyon doing mountain 2nd - 3rd gear /slow technical riding. (Sorta like pinnacles, near Lake arrowhead) My Buddy had a xr250. Anyways it was really hot that day!
FYI: I found an article about how you could build up a vacuum behind the cover and it would suck the oil thru the seal if the engine got hot and then cooled down differently maybe that is what happened.....:bonk:

SWAG...i wud think the rubber gromet where the stator wires exit the cover wud equalize the pressure differential before it wud pull oil through the crank seal...unless the seal wus bad. :smirk:

WELL...(Some Background)
The XR650R has been ridden hard, but never abused. (30-40 days a year at WOT, Desert) I ride with other xr650 riders... The bike has been very well maintained With constant care and oil/filter changes every 500-700 miles ( Mobil 1 SYN, 15w-50). Valves re done every 3rd ride and so on...This is the 1st Problem it has ever had since I have owned it. :banghead:
I KNOW.... IT IS NOT A BILLY GOAT BIKE...but I just had to ride! I have since bought a xr 250 for NON DESERT low speed rock crawling!
Jeez, I just got to get this fixed Desert Season is HERE!!!:ride:

I am 100% sure that seal is on the outside of the crank case. Should be able to pull the flywheel and access the seal for replacement.

Hunting for pictures....

Left side crank case from the outside. So this is right behind the flywheel and the big hole there in the middle is where the seal sits.

And same left side crank case from the inside showing where the crank bearing fits.

If you use the drill and hole and drive a screw into the seal method be careful to not hit the bearing behind the seal.

OR use a pick to poke a hole in the seal and pull out, the picks with one end thats bent to a 90 degree, ive used those to pull seals and they work well, thin and easy to get thru and pull out. If you dont have there really cheap
