I thought this was a dry (NO OIL) area?

It is dripping oil while parked from the bottom of the cover.

I removed the cover/stator and about a 1/2 quart of oil came out!

How is oil getting in there? bad/worn crankshaft seal?

ANYBODY KNOW???

Yep, crank seal unfortunatly. Hopefully it doesn't require splitting the cases.

Is there any harm in just getting a new cover gasket, and just letting the oil fill up & stay in there, in the ignition cover?

I know xr600's have a wet ignition area.

Any bad reasons why I can't just live with it... and keep checking the oil level?

its a bad idea cuz its letting the oil out of the engine where it needs to be and just sitting in the cover. Unforutnately you need to get that taken care of soon. Im not sure but it may be possible to take flywheel off and replace seal without case splitting but i dont know for sure

I know why. When I had a 650R I ran into the same trouble. The space within the stator area gets pressurized due to the heat and causes the seal to leak.

Summers Racing had a very cool kit that relieved the pressure. He is no longer in business as far as I know.

It is very easy to do. Just use very small 1/16" hollow flexible plastic tubing. Punch a small hole through the rubber seal that your wires come through, run the tubing through the rubber just inside the stator cover, drill a small hole in your air box and route the other end through there, hold it in place with a dab of silicone.

No more leaks. I was lucky. My stator was wet. After the modification it stayed dry without replacing the crank seal.

Hope this helps....
