Has anyone hosed their bike by not greasing the rim on your foam filter?

I neglected to grease the seal on my UNI filter at least the last 4 or 5 times and now it's smoking. I do a very thorough job of cleaning the filter and airbox often but somehow dirt must have gotten past it.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe little particles of sand make their way through the filter. I always use plenty of Bel Ray filter oil (super sticky) on it. I doubt anything is getting through the foam itself - must be going past the gasket. The gasket always looked clean enough though.

I know how to fix it, I just don't know what caused it :thumbsdn:

its hard to say, its possible that your valve stem seals just started going, and maybe not from sand passing thru the base of filter. I would think that its not from that, as long as the filter was seated properly to airbox. My L started smoking once last year on startup, then i didnt notice it later on. was wierd??? I know a few times i didnt grease mine but sprayed the filter oil on the sealing surface so it was "oily foam" and im sure it sealed fine

I think I figured it out - I re-used the bendy hose from my smog pump to connect the case to my airbox and the chain wore a hole in it. I think my engine may have sucked some crap in through there.

I'll pull the valve inspection covers off and see if the cam looks ok or not. It needs probably rings and a good honing at least - we'll see.
