Well if you want black and turned down silver hubs (not blue I know but loads cheaper) send your regular silver excels to TCR wheels in Lodi, CA and they will anadoze the wheels black, and turn down and polish your hubs (like ktm) all for $500. Includes breakdown and re-trueing...

not really.. i did it myself and laced them wrong a few times.. but u get it down pretty quick.. just remember theirs an iside and outside spoke..

takes about 30 mins.. and if u get urself a torque wrench its pretty much trued in 1 shot..

Do you know of any video that tells you how to do it? How did you learn?

you would be far better off buying aftermarket wheels. They can be heavier, but also use larger and stronger parts. So there is a tradeoff there.

Then keep the stock units for practice rims or spares or sell them to offset the cost.

You can find them all the time $500-550 on ebay or local craigslist ads.

disagree all you want, but by the time you take to lace, true, powdercoat what ever, you are way better off with new wheels. especially with a $1200 budget and then have a second set.

That wasn't what I disagreed with. I quoted the specific part of your post I was at odds with.

The OEM rims are Excels already, and while you can probably buy stronger spokes than the stock ones, Yamaha does not have a problem with weak spokes.

As far as the hubs, some are stronger than stock, and some are not. In fact, some are just so much expensive trash (IMO). Notwithstanding some of the earliest '06 rear hubs that had weak drive side bearing pockets, the stock YZ hubs are strong enough fro just about anyone, and are lighter than many of the aftermarket products out there. Of course, if one has the stock hubs turned for appearance's sake, the machinist doing the job must use discretion in doing so.

But as far as costs go, I really doubt you can buy a good pair of hubs for the price of powder coating the stockers. Turning and anodizing might actually cost more, though.

2 back excel rims

2 stock hubs off a 07 yz450

2 sets of excel spline drive nipples

bridgetone 403/404

rim strips

rim locks

tubes

truing..

$750.. 800 if u wanted to powerdercoat the hubs.

like i said check ebay.. u can find some killer deals.. just have to know were to look.. and btw the hubs were new..

I just built a set of wheels with stock hubs (that I chemically etched to dark grey) with new bearings and seals, new Buchanan spokes, and new Excel rims for $440 total, and I still have my stock wheels. That is 1/3 the cost of buying new wheels with equivalent components. The best part is they are lighter than my Talon "ultra-light" wheels by almost a pound each! If you are willing to lace them yourself you can save major money.
