This thread definitely needs to be part of the FAQ. :busted:

This is 2nd hand info I've got from a guy who done a LOT of RFVCs.

Is your NX-pump pre or post 1994? For pre -94 there wont be any trouble, but from what I've heard the side cover on the -94 and onwards is different. Only pumps -94 and onwards should be higher capacity.

I hope the info I got is wrong, since I'd love to have the large capacity oil pump in combination with kick start...

Otherwise we'll all have to keep bumping it so it doesn't get lost.

My NX pump will be circa 1990 so I guess thats why it works out ok with the XR clutch cover. I wonder what the difference is?

Very nice write up.

One comment for those kickstart L owners.  A completely dead battery might require disconnecting the battery in order to get the bike to start.  The CDI relies on the +12 volt supply.  With no battery the alternator generates enough juice to allow the CDI to fire.  A completely dead battery might be enough of a load to prevent the CDI from working.

Regarding the oil pump, I too am interested in possible interchange between the years. I have found information elsewhere about "high capacity" oil pumps and side cover fitment, but no one seems to know exactly what years, models, or part numbers are significant.

Getting ready to begin the teardown on my piggie (need to replace a broken countershaft). Has me thinking it may be resurected + kicker!
Thanks for the post!

Also think about changing the second gear to the nx650 2nd gear... It lessens the gap between 1st and 2nd.  I've been thinking about the gear swap, and I sure wish I had a kick starter the other day when the piggy didn't want to start on the trail, that is what got me to thinking about this mod...  both require splitting the case.

Absolutely... should be a sticky

The 650L's first gear is the only one different from those in XR600s. From what I can tell, the NX650's ratios are the same as the 650L. :busted:

That's the same thing I found when I was looking for parts for my kickstart conversion.  Both the 88 and 89 NX650 countershaft gears are the same as the XR650L.  The XR600R uses a different 1st gear Part # 23411-MN1-670 which is a 31 tooth gear.  While the XR650L uses part #23411-MN9-000 which is a 32 tooth gear.  Interestingly the NX650 uses a different gear on the mainshaft also.  The NX650 uses a 16 tooth gear part #23421-MN9-010 while the XR650L and XR600R use a 17 tooth gear part # 23421-MN9-641.  To confuse things further, the XR600R mainshaft also has different part numbers for the other three gears but the same number of teeth on the gears as the XR650L and NX650.  Probably won't be able to see if they are interchangeable unless you actually try them.

It is my understanding, that the nx 2nd gear will go right in, this is according to info I've gotten from people on advrider, who have done the mod.

Thanks for the post!

Even if you don't plan on installing the kick start, if I had to replace my counter shaft, absolutely use the xr600r shaft.  If you want to add the kicker later the rest of it can be added without removing the  engine or splitting the case.

I would also consider the 88 nx650 2nd gear while you have the case split.  I'm still collecting the info on this conversion.  It gets rid of the huge gap between 1st, and 2nd..

I'm pretty sure  you just need the gear,  23421-MN9-010.

I have recieved confirmation from a tt member that it is true.  The 2nd gear from the 1988 nx650 is the only part needed to get rid of the gear gap on the xr650l.

Furthermore, I checked the part numbers both gear boxes...(copy,paste,print) All identical except for 2nd gear, and the counter shaft.  The differences in the counter shaft is the sprocket output shaft spline count.

I ordered the nx gear, and the xr600r counter shaft for a 2000 model.... Let's hope all goes well, I still need more parts, but ya got to start somewhere!

THANKS FOR THE REPLY BOY HONDA!!!!!!

What is the tooth count on the NX650 second gear cluster?

The plot thickens... may end up with a kicker plus a new second gear. I have already begun stalking eBay looking for a case and kick lever :bonk:

I don't think you're alone there.  I've noticed the price of kickstarter shafts and related stuff has shot up recently (result of this thread no doubt).
