I'm running a Conti Force 150/70-17 on the rear of my KLX on a Warp 9 rim. I just gave my tire a good look today and found a wear pattern I've never seen before. About 35 to 40 percent of the tires center line (that is, 35 to 40 percent of its circumference) is worn down to the wear bars. The remaining 60 to 65 percent of the center line still has at least an 1/8 inch of tread left???

Anyone experince this before? Could an out of balance rear wheel possible cause this?

Note: I'm not sure if it's out of balance at this moment. Doesn't feel like it?

odd even wear often occurs with aggressive(relatively)tread under minimal power. Swap the tires direction on the rim to use the remaining tread. shock control will affect this also.

Got ya, turn the tire around. Thanks! But, what do you mean by "...agrressive tread under minimal power"?

I'll post a pic or two soon. However, right now I gotta go ride now while it's still light. Priorities! :smirk:

They are in as much as there is an arrow on the side "suggesting" witch way it should rotate.

Usually they don't stamp an arrow on the sidewall for the hell of it. But if the tires basically shot, I guess you have nothing to lose.

the main concern is in wet conditions namely hydorplaning conditions. A directional tire mounted wrong is usually more likely to hydroplane. Also a directional tire mounted incorrectly is also more likely to wear unevenly, so maybe yours are mounted backwards since uneven wear has already occurred

Here's a few pics. I just don't get how this happens?

This is one half of the tire, decent tread.

This is the other half, not so good!

My knobby tires do the same thing, I have a flat spot in the rim that causes the tire to "hop" up and down, causing irregular tire wear. I believe that you can balance the rim and the tire will wear more evenly.

The guy that mounted it said it went on just fine, and the bead looks perfect? So... yes

I have seen this before. Looks like a balance issue.

Could be balance, wheel out of round, or a combination of the two. Also, it may not feel bad if it is under inflated......Pull the rear wheel and have it trued and then get a new tire mounted and balanced.

Yep. The pressure was fine, but the rear suspension is more or less set up for fast desert riding, so it's possible that the suspension simply sucked it up.

Thanks everybody. Think I'll try a 150/60-17 Shinko 006 this time. Looks like a pretty good tire, especially for the price!

1 or the other, maybe both.

Mine is also like this but not quite as pronounced, but at one spot the wear bar is visible and on the other side its almost bald. I'm also running a contiforce SM tire on the rear. I just assumed it was bad luck with it getting scrubbed off at the same spot when doing monos, slamming the brakes, and it sliding a bit when downshifting from 5th to 3rd etc...
