Exhausts - differences between model years ?

I have a 2002 DRZ400S and I'm wondering if the exhaust from a 2008 SM or 2007 SM or 2005 SM will fit. The part numbers seem to be slightly different, but maybe the differences are just in appearance. The header pipe and all the clamps/seals/etc seem to be the same.
The part number for 2000-2004 S is 14310-29F21-H01.
For 2006 and up, both S and SM, the part number is 14310-29FA0-H01.
So it seems S and SM use the same exhaust, but I wonder if the newer exhausts will fit on the older models.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could share their experience with this.

Thanks !

i dont think it will be any better than what you have. muffler/tip are different on the SM.

Right, I'm not looking for anything "better". I just want to replace the original muffler because the tip got blown away by a backfire. I can get a new SM muffler for $110. At the dealer, it would be $350-$400. And it looks like any aftermarket exhaust would cost at least $300 and it would be louder, which I don't want.

you can replace just the tip. there are tips out there that will fit your S pipe for under $110.
