I don't know if the swingarm will fit or not but I just bought a 93 XR600 shock for my 88 and I checked it against a buddies XR400 shock and they are identical I didn't test fit the XR400 shock in my 88 frame but the 93 XR600 shock with piggyback resevoir does fit.

What will you benefit from in switching to an XR400 swingarm?

IIRC the XR400 swinger is open at the front (engine cases fit between the two front ears of the swinger) while the XR600 swinger is solid across the front (engine not really a stressed member, at least not as much).
