Dirt got past air filter - overhaul options?

My bike went down in a deep muddy puddle. Air box filled up with muddy water. There was no water in the cylinder and very little in the muffler. I wrung out the air filter and rode home, about 100 km.

By the time I got home the cam chain was noisy (recently installed MCCT needed a big adjustment). Also I think it was starting to used oil because the oil level was at the bottom of the dipstick, and I am pretty sure it was above half at the beginning of the day.

I did more investigation and found there was a lot of dust between the air filter and the carb, and the valves now needed adjusting. It has gone 11000 km.

I suspect it needs a teardown, valves done, rings, etc. Options are:

do it myself
take it to a local dealer
send it to Sisneros Speed Works.

I would like to hear from those who have been through this before so I can evaluate these options. Thanks

Unless you can do it yourself, I'd send it to Eddie. Very reasonable and done right. I did with pretty much the exact same thing going on you do. No regrets here.

Well you mentioned doing it yourself.... Do you have motorcycle wrenching experience? Are you looking to go back to stock or bigbore? Bigbore / stroker? If the valves are moving that fast,, need to look at new valves and having them installed by someone who really knows what they are doing.

Sending the motor to SSW is a sure bet to getting back a solid lump of motor that you can bolt in and go.
If you have the talent and tools, doing it yourself and with select items done by those with the correct tools is a cost effective way to get a motor built.

Over estimating your own ability or taking short cuts due to inexperience or lack of the proper tool is the fastest way to a second broken motor.

From what you have described, I'd suggest a leak down test to pin down what is going wrong with the motor.

The entire motor should be torn down and inspected due to the water ingestion. Might be as simple as needing valves, or valves and piston / cylinder. Could be worse if the dirt , water made it in to the motor.

Have you drained the oil?

I plan to send the motor to SSW, or maybe drive there with the whole bike (about 16 hours driving). My wife and I could mountain bike or hike while we are there.

I don't plan on doing a leak down test - don't have the equipment. There are enough symptoms to convince me I no longer have a reliable motor, so it has to be taken apart.

When I drained the oil it was not milky, just looked dark for the number of hours on it. I'm sure that no slugs of water entered the engine. The dirt came from the muddy water that I couldn't squeeze out of the filter. The inside of the carb inlet boot had a heavy coating of fine dust. In future I plan to carry a spare filter.

I'll probably keep it stock - I want maximum reliability and to be able to use regular gas if necessary.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

You’re on the right path to getting what you want,, now just decide what that is

Talk with SSW, let Eddie know what you’re looking for, reliability, pump gas, and he will give you the build options, you pick the price and performance package you want.
