I don't know if anyone has any advise but i just aquired a
xl600r, 1985, and it runs great and starts easy when it sits
for a few days. If I take it for a ride and shut it off for a bit
and try to start it back up, it really dosen't want to start.
I tryed to kick started the bike for about ten min.
but is almost impossible at this point but if I pop start
it down a hill it starts right up and runs fine, no stalling. If this
makes sense to anyone some ideas on how to fix this problem
would be greatly appriciated.
thanks anyone!

if you don't re-set the carbs, and re-jet them, your rt leg will soon be twice the size of your left leg!
the XLs are famous for this problem.
Get a HONDA factory book, and re-set all the specs. go up a few sizes on the jets. ( seek help from others on TT for what size to use )

and finally..... are you aware of "the drill" ???

There are a few posts on that as well.... search and learn !
the very short version: do not touch the throttle when kicking. I put my rt hand on the crossbar to MAKE SURE I didn't twist the throttle by mistake.

I think I have a .pdf of the carb section from a Honda book somewhere...
pm me if you need me to dig it up.

118- 120 main jets in both carbs are a good start. learn the "drill" for starting. Move the kickstart slowly at the bottom of its travel when the auto compression release is off to reliably find TDC. It will stop solid. Bring the kickstart back to the top, give it about 10-20 degrees more movement to get past TDC. return to top and kick once fully, no throttle at all if you value your foot. If all is right it will fire right up. I don't even have to get up off the seat usually.

If you're doing the "drill" and it still won't start when hot, check the stator and valve clearances. Stator failure is common with the pre-'88 bikes after 20+ years of bathing in hot oil.

for the utmost in reliability on my XL600R I replaced teh stsor weith a new one from Ricky stator, replaced the coil and CDI also. Installed a dynojet carb kit and a FMF powercore IV pipe (for an XR600) starts easy and runs strong!

hey thanks for the advise I have gotten alot of replys about this problem
and they have all been really helpfull. My leg is still the same size but
I got a damn good work out while trying to kick over the bike in the middle
of the woods after stalling it out in the middle of a mud puddle.
Oh Yeah!!!!
I hope I can fix this bad boy.

Hey motosprtman,
I appriciate all the tips, the only one im not clear on is the
"replace the stsor" what is an stsor, I am a new owner and not really
the best mechanic actually probably pretty bad but hope to learn alot
over the winter working on the bike.

I think that is a typo, I believe he meant stator. It is good to see someone types as good as me.
