I want to fit a 450 cam onto my 2002 WR426 primarily for the auto decomp. Most of what I read, talks about using the YZ450 cam and not the WR450 cam? Is this primarily due to availability of the former? Can I assume either will work but with a different powerband? Can someone explain the differences between the two. I plan on leaving the intake cam WR stock.

What are all the years that I can pull from if surfing the used parts (ebay) market? 03? 04?... I am trying to find one at a good price.
Thanks for the help.

You can use either the WR or the YZ cam from 03-05 to the decomp mod.

The main difference is going to be the WR cam is "milder" than the YZ cam :busted:

IMHO I think buying a used Cam is dangerous and if you must you should use the $$savings to buy two new buckets for the exaust cam so that you don't have an incompatibility issue with already worn parts that have become "familiar" with each other.

I could be wrong on this but isnt the new exhaust cam only $150.00 or less new?

There is useful information here that you may be interested in.

What exactly does "milder" mean in reference to the WR vs. YZ. I ride mostly woods and need the low end, as it is currently very chuggable through tough stuff. I wouldn't want to loose that with a YZ exhaust cam.
Does the YZ cam just add more power across the powerband or does it actually change the profile? Thanks

With a WR cam there is a midrange “hit”. With a YZ cam the bike will pull longer and harder but the power delivery is more even.

I have a used '03 WR450 cam in my '01 WR426 and have had no compatability issues. The bike is so much easier to start.

The only thing it does is makes kick starting easier. So if you have to kick the bike 4 or 5 times before it will start it won't kill your leg for the rest of the trip.

I'd suggest cleanig your carb and checking the hot start mechanism to get y our bike running better.

Does anyone know about the YFZ exhaust cam from Yamaha's quads. Is it the same power profile as the YZF dirt bike? Will the 04 YFZ model fit the same as the 03-04 YZF model?
