Since buying my DRZS last spring, I've enjoyed it trememdously. Done all the recommended mods (3X3, jet kit, case guards, skid plate, etc.) I got full knobbies, stiffer fork springs and got the suspension dialed in with Race Tech. I also put it on a diet with a plastic tank, lighter smaller turn signals and taillight. Oh yeah, and better bars and raised clamps.

The engine is stock and I want to keep it that way for reliability. I ride primarily in the forest, and am thinking of a exhaust system, but it must be quiet and have a spark arrester. I've search through the archieves, but can't really find the anwers to my desire for a quiet lighter muffler.

Is the stock muffler/headpipe the best way to go for quiet and forest friendly despite it's weight? Any aftermarket that is lighter and nearly as quiet? Also, I've heard inklings of using a larger diameter "E" model headpipe with the stock muffler, but this requires modification?

Just installed the Yoshi RS-2 carbon fiber on my drz. I was concerned about it being to loud. With the spark arrestor in,it does not seem to be much louder than a stock muffler that has had the end cap drilled out. If you take the potato out,it gets loud. I am very pleased with the sound. I also like the ability to remove the arrestor for street riding. Hope this helps.

End cap drilled out??? What is that all about? I guess I need to hit the archieves more.

For quiet....go with the E model exhaust (headpipe and muffler--unless you want to mod an S/SM muffler to fit the E header), stock end cap (not drilled out). All drilling it out does is add noise w/negligible to no power gain.

IMO the quietest aftermerket exhaust that would shave weight off would be something along the lines of FMF powerbomb header w/the FMF Q2 exhaust. But what you would primarily be paying for there is less weight.

The beauty of the quiet stock exhaust is you also never have to repack the exhaust.

I think the MRD/SSW pipe is a good choice. Not too terribly quiet though.:banghead: Do a search on Ebrabeak. I think. He has the MRD/SSW pipe and then made his own carbon fiber can. Netted close to the same gains as the MRD can but much quieter. His carbon fiber fabricating skills are pretty good though. I am also not sure how good you are at doing this kind of project or if you want to do it yourself. Good luck in your PIPEQUEST. I love my uncorked MRD/SSW pipe, then I run mainly street.:ride:

E header size and a Q2 are about as good as you can get and still be quiet. You won't get much gains in power but it is a lot lighter and better looking than stock.

That describes the FMF Q2 muffler and Powerbomb head pipe perfectly. :)

It will be louder than the stock muffler, but using anything other than a stock S muffler will be louder because the stock S muffler is very muffled.
And, very heavy as mufflers go because it's all plain ol' steel with lots of baffling in there.

The noise volume of the Q2 and the good-sounding deep tone it puts out are completely acceptable to me, and I'm also very concerned with making too much noise while riding anywhere other than on my own property.
The Q2 also has a spark arrestor built into it.

You'll gain power across the rev range, with the most noticable differences being in the low and mid range with the engine gaining revs a bit quicker.

So, basically, this exhaust is a great choice for what you want to do:
Make a compromise between performance and noise - lose a bit of weight, gain a bit of sound, gain a bit of performance, but not be so loud that it makes you nervous. :)
