I have a 07SM with TT FCR, 3x3 and ordered an Intake Hotcam and was in the mist of swapping it in for the standard SM "IN" cam. But I notice the number of teeth from the paint marked dot's by hotcam to the paint marked arrow on a tooth marked on the Hotcam was different then on the OEM cam tooth count
OEM CAM = left to right CW was 8 teeth and right to left CCW was 9 teeth (arrow points t valley)
HOTCAM = left to right CW was 9 teeth and right to left CCW was 8 teeth (arrow on tooth)
Does this make a difference (correct, or mistake by Hotcam or am i nuts:bonk: )??

While noticing this differance I ended up skipping the chain a bunch of teeth on the EX cam and loosing TDC marking line in the hole.:foul:

My 1st question is --> I can find TDC but does it have to be on the compression up stroke or the exhaust up stroke, I have now both cams out:bonk: if it matters how do I tell which stroke is which??

2nd I noticed when trying to seat the IN cam I couldn’t set the cam, it would rock on the right tappet as if it was high. Prior I took it out tappets and shims one at a time to determine the thickness value off the shims, I then put them back in as they came out before trying to seat the IN cam. Also before breaking any bolts free on the journals I check tappet clearance to be on the low side at right0.004" & left 0.008. I can’t figure out why it won’t seat unless I push I down with my thumb but I think I am just compressing the spring. , any ideas???. (I know that I have rotates the crank shaft a few times in-between to line out he TDC line, in the indicator hole.

3rd does this look correct , 15pins , the IN cam dose not look level based on the dots.Posted Image
Note: the TDC line always fall naturally to the left as in the pic, is that standard?

1: TDC, with cams out,, there is no difference between compression stroke and exhaust,, thats only a term when related to cam position.

Place the LINE next to the t in the center of the window.. Your pic shows it wrong.. the LINE, not the T in the center.

2: forget counting teeth with after market cams. TDC on crank, install the cams so the lobes are pointing at 10 & 2,, the index lines on the sprockest will be even with the head surface

3: the pic of the cam sprockest looks right.. as long as the TDC mark when you took it is in the ceter of the window, and you pushed in on the rear cam chain guide to take up chain slack (which will rotate the cam slightly) A pic from the other side so we can see the cam lobes would confirm.. Once you think you have it.. reinstall the cam caps, and CCT. Rotate the motor around till you get back to TDC compression stroke.. Check index lins on sprockets and if the cam lobes are pointing at 10 and 2.

4: If the cam lobes are pointing away from the bucket, and the came will not seat... you may not have got the shim back in to the spring top correctly. Remove the cam and bucket.. use a tiny drop of grease on the shim and put it in the recess of the spring top. now put the bucket back on.. Test fit the cam again with out the chain.

A couple of things.
You are not at TDC
I have never seen a hotcam with painted markings. They are always stamped that I've seen...
Also, the sproket bolts are all the way against one side of the adjusting slot. I've never seen that either. Mine certainly aren't.
Were I you, I would degree the cam, or call Hotcams and ask what's up.

its a old hotcam. being at one end of the slot is normal. they can be any where in the slot.

you need to actually put it at TDC. line up the 1 on the ex cam with the front head surface.the 2 will straight up.when you installt he intake cams the marks will be level with the head surface with the single mark straight up.

You might want to check the clearance between the upper timing chain slider and the back side of the intake cam (where the sprocket bolts to the cam). I had to clearance mine by grinding the slider a little.

So, I see here- Is it just good enough to change the intake cam? What is the difference with not changing the other (Ex). I was ready to order this week. Please advise. Thanks guys

Just finished IN only swap, got caught up in some other work and travel. What I have noticed is, as Eddie has mentioned, as well for some reason my top speed has increased by about 7km/hr. As well at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle the bike speed surges, might need to rejet the carb (3x3, FCR-MX recommend jetting by eddie) , stock SM exhaust any ideas?
