Just thought I'd post this cause' i didn't find anything when I was looking. How to remove the needle from the slide on my KLX400SR was not obvious. I never want to apply pressure not knowing how things come apart. I finally discovered that the Needle does press out. There is a 4 prong plastic clip feature in the stock slide that is not visible. A little pressure on the needle and it all popped out. Careful, the holder and the spring may pop out to who knows where, and keep your eyes away so that's not where they end up.

Thanks for sharing your tip

Though a look though the common thread reference or a search does bring up a lot of info on the topic.

Be careful when you remove or replace the needle cap.. Those four plastic "fingers" that retain it in the valve (slide) are easily broken.. Use a slight twisting motion, and easy pressure in or out.. DO NOT ROCK the cap to the side...

Niiiiiice, Bronco 78! Thanks.
Another Noob thing. My 03 KLX400SR is/was (haven't tested it yet) surging at 75mph cruising speed. I read in TT that the a change in needle position might be the cure. I moved my needle from pos 3 to pos 4, and saw that the Main jet is a 140. Most of what I read suggested pos 2 and a main of 155. I'm at 5,600 feet in colorado and ride from 5,600 to 14,000 feet. Should I be concerned? Bike runs great except for the surging.

The stock needle does not have an adjustable clip in the Mikuni carb and comes with a 142.5 main jet. If yours is adjustable and has a 140 mj it must have a jet kit in it. The different kits require different jetting specs. Do you know what kit is in it? I'm guessing it's a DJ stage 1 kit?
