05 WR450 Starter issue plus oil in Frame

Recommended Posts

HI everyone. My 05 WR450 is doing some strange things. The last owner did not take all that good of care of it.

When the bike is in gear if i roll it backwards it sounds like its grabbing the starter. The bike ran fine for about 10 min and died. Would not start again with the button or the kick.

Also, I checked the oil and when I pulled the dip stick out oil came spewing out of the hole. Bike was not running. Whats going on here.

It could be that the strainer at the bottom of the frame tank is clogged and needs cleaning. It may be keeping oil under pressure in the frame tank.

It is suggested that you do this with every oil filter change/cleaning. Your oil filter should be changed (or cleaned if its the reusable stainless steel variaety) every 3 oil changes, or otherwise, every 30 hrs of ride time. This is also dependent on the conditions you ride and your riding style.

As for your other problem, I don't know, but if you weren't getting good oil return from the frame tank, the engine may have developed severe behavioral problems.

First drain the oil and see how much comes out. It may just be overfilled. Then refill with the proper amount per manual and check again. Meanwhile the starter is normal. There is a one-way sprag attached to the flywheel that will engage the starter if you rotate the crank backwards. Three things are needed to start: fuel, spark, compression. Open the drain screw on the carb and see if fuel drains out. On one of my bikes I had the float needle stick closed hence no fuel. Pull the plug and check for spark. Beyond that pull the valve cover and check the cam chain is tight and the valve clearances are ok.

Thanks for the help guys. I will check the oil first. As the motor not running, that would be because I am a retard. I left the gas off. = Epic Fail.

Well that's actually good news! Change the oil and I'll bet everything will be fine.
