The same thing happened to me.
I had my welder friend weld the two pieces back together. All works great and saved money on a new one..

There is a reason they come apart......it's a fail-safe weak link...

Wouldn't the starter clutch take care of that fail safe. I don't see the point, or the reason for that reduction gear to ever spin. If that is the case I will swap it out befor it's too late and something breaks.

Thanks for the info Krannie.

It is a larger gear with much larger torque forces.
If you don't run your starter excessively (poorly tuned bike) you will probably never have a problem.

Rehashing an old post. I occasionally have a prob where when kicking my CRF 450X, it gets tough to push through the stroke and it sounds as though the starter is stuck and engaged. This happens for a few kicks then might not happen till next ride. Does this sound like the pressed gear failure you guys are talking of ? I've just bought a new lithium battery so hopefully I dont have to worry to much about the kicker in the future

Wait, so can I just reweld these gears back together? TT wants 80 bucks for a new pressed gear!?
