Hi folks,

I have a 2008 TE250 with the power-up kit and would like to enter some AMA-sanctioned off-road events, starting with dual sport in Wabeno WI next month. These events require 96db exhaust noise maximum, supposedly strict too. Do you think this setup with no engine mods will be 96db or less? Has anyone had a similar setup tested?

Doesn't seem loud to me, but I'm not db calibrated. I'd prefer not to drive all the way up to Wabeno just to be turned away for the factory power-up slip-on...

Thanks!

http://www.webbikewo...st-standard.htm

The article above states the standard for measuring sound levels. A meter from Radio Shack is about $45-$50, or maybe a used one can be found for $30 on eBay.

I would say you'll be OK at 96db. The US standards are 92db.

In general you have to rev the engine to a certain rpm and measure the sound at the height of the muffler at 20" away at a 45º angle. The sound meter has to be set to certain parameters, like A weighted and slow response. The pictures of a setup I'd seen show the meter on a stand so that a person's body does not interfere with the sound measurement.

If you google up the standard J2825 you might find the whole thing explained.

This looks like the off-road version of the test.

My 09 TE510 was tested at 86 db @4000 rpm on the Aug 16 weekend.

Stock exhaust with full power up kit installed and spark arrestor in place.

I am the president of the WDSR- I might be doing sound check depending on how busy I am.

Anyway- you don't need to by your own sound tester- Yes we test per set standards and have become more stringent. Its more about education/ awareness to promote the sport and not upset the locals to much.

For Huskys and other bikes not in "the Book" there is a formula to determine what the proper rpm each bike should be tested at: set in SAE J1287:
RPM = 250,000 / stroke (mm).

08-09Husqvarna TE250/310 55mm
4545 or 4500rpm

08/09 Husqvarna TE450 60.7
4118 or 4100 rpm

08/09 Husqvarna TE510 67.8
3687 or 3600 rpm

We have tested some huskys and they did pretty good with stock pipes (pre- 09) the power up kits are a bit louder. My 09TE450 tested at 99db with stock American spark arrestor. The Euro DB killer is much quieter- I modified an American DB killer- its now about 6 inches long- similar to the Euro DB killer.
Your 250 will probably do fine. Don't worry. Generally if it seems loud it is.

See ya up there!!

You said "stock exhaust" Isn't your 09 stock exhaust the Arrow? If thats 86db, thats pretty good. I believe your stock exhaust is different than my 08?

Yes - my exhaust is different from the 08 (from the factory) - but completely stock.

It does not have an "Arrow" label like the 08 does, and is not exactly the same shape.

It is odd that another member with a 09 TE450 tested at 99db - that is such a huge difference that it makes me question the validity of the test I had.

bbcmat, sounds like you have the stock non-powerup kit exhaust, the one with the catalytic built in.

The power up kit includes an aluminum Arrow pipe. The stock exhaust is steel and weighs ~11lbs. whereas the powerup kit Arrow weighs 5lbs.

We had our '08 TC250 with the MX Arrow exhaust sound tested at a National meet. Using the FIM method it came in at 91.4dB, and the power up exhaust for the TE's is quieter than that.

The Husky 09's had the cat in the midpipe - power up kit did not require a muffler replacement.

Update: My 2008 TE250 with power-up kit and factory db killer installed yielded only 93.5db! Had to attach the original spark arrestor screen to the db killer, but no big deal.

By the way, the Scotts sub-mount steering damper kit fits great. Raises the bar a bit, but no higher than the highest factory setting that I already had.

Where did you get the db killer?

I have seen reports of the husky part referred to as the "euro db killer" not fitting 2008s perfectly and needing to cut it to fit...?

Call Halls Husquvarna and they can tell you for sure and sell you one if you decide: Phone#(217) 789-0107

Yup, DRZnXJnWI is right - call Halls Cycles.

Mine is the only db killer they recommended for the 2008 TE250 with power-up Arrow pipe. It's only about 2in long, and that's almost all that will fit. The pipe internals are angled down inward from there, so there are not too many other options without some metal shop creativity.

Honestly, from where I sit I could hardly tell any noise difference. But hey it passed noise testing with the thing in there and power delivery was still fine, so I'm satisfied.
