i'll summerise what has happened as its been an ongoing thread over on DBW in OZ !....

bought the te510 about a month ago...
went for a ride and had a couple of stop starts as you do waiting on people and breaks etc..
battery got drained and had to bump start/kick start her over...
so, got it home and stripped all connections to find regulator plug had 2 dirty conectors and was getting 10 volts at the battery terminals while running.. cleaned those up and checked charge.. 18volts ! :bonk:

so i cleaned every single connector and earth on the bike from top to bottom and nothing changed... so common concensus was stuffed regulator...got new one today from dealer, same damn thing.. 18v... this was with bike running and positive terminal removed from battery so may be why it was showing 18v...

so, here are the statistics.....new battery and regulator, same results..

1, across terminals , engine off....13.6v

2, across terminals , engine on, 15.3 volts. and stays about there on steady idle no matter what !!

3, across battery earth and posi lead disconnected after running 18v but comes down to 15.3...(i am sure this is result of disconnecting it )..

4, every lead/cable/connector has been changed or cleaned...

5, new battery is same as old...

6, new reg is same as old.......

i would appreciate any help with this as i dont want to cook any parts on my bike !

Hi ,
an electrical problem is usually the worst to track down ,
not something I like doing,

just a couple of basic pointers..,

have you verified that the meter is reading accurately, put it on the battery of a car ,and check that it is reading within normal limits ( 12 /13.8 volts)

seems dumb - but I had a meter that read 18v on a 12 v circuit, but was accurate everywhere else,

does the rate change under loads,
starter , main lighting, - etc?

I'm not in a position to diagnose it, but may give others a headstart,

there were issues with the '05 desert racers ( ekim yak...) - etc, who were shorting out the generator side with the metal particles in the oil, maybe these guys had other issues as they racked up long hours and miles in short time..

all the best,
Charlie

Ive got the same bike, ive had it for a year now. I bought the bike unknowingly with an electrical problem. the bike just wasnt charging properly. I have a baha kit on it. so when i measured the charge at the battery without any load on the battery the bike seemed fine, charging and steady at 14ish volts. with a load on, lights, the bike couldnt keep charging, the volts would sputter at 10v. turned out it was the alternator. an expensive repair. now your bike is outputting 18v from the regulator, right? well that tells me your regulator is not regulating. shouldnt be that high ever. the only thing i can think of is your alternator is frying your reg. check the output of you alternator. check out http://www.electrosp...ing-diagram.pdf

same on both batteries and same on new reg as old... i have done every connection on the bike bar none !!!!

i will try that diagram but aint no hero in that dept... will also check mulimeter is good or bad, which is which..

new reg, new battery... same outcome... not making sense....:(

charge rate when positive lead is disconnected and idling is 18v....

voltage across terminals when running and connected up as normal is 15.3v regardless of lights or anything else....

all sorted !!!!! yee haa !!! it was both battery and regulator... i reckon the regulator has goosed the battery and when i swapped the reg it was throwing it too much as it was damaged also ?? anyway, fitted new reg and new battery... lights and fan on= 14.2-14.4v..... and with all off, 14.2-14.4.... spot on !!! happy days ! thanks to all who helped !!!!! :)
