Scott vs. Ohlins 2.0 steering dampener for my 09' YZ450

I'm looking to get a steering dampener and wonder about these two: Scott vs. Ohlins 2.0 for an 09' YZ450F

My concerns: The Scott sure seems to take up a lot of space and looks kind of bulky up on top of the triple clamp. The undermount looks ok but raises the bar up quite bit. The Ohlins looks like it mounts under stock bar and is a lot lower profile if more expensive ?.

Any performance concerns/breakage/advice/general comments of users of either? I ride mostly track.

I know nothing about the 2.0 beyond what it looks like, but the Scotts IS an Ohlins. For what ever reason, the Scotts is less expensive than the Ohlins version of that damper. Mine has been flawless (and I got it used in need of repair and fixed it) to the extent that I don't see why I personally would spend even more money on a more expensive unit. Scotts does have a "fender" mount that will keep it completely out of the way.

I have the under bar mount on my 07 YZ450 and am 6'0". I had to get new bars to compensate for the height rise (25mm). Carmichaels with the Scotts sub mount will get you to the Windham height/bend without a stabilizer which is the preference here on TT. My set up is comfortable and I am happy with it. The Ohlins 2.0 is $200 more than the Scotts set up and is a more adjustable unit without raising the bars. With my Scotts, I set it at 3/4 turns out and forget it so on the fly adjustments are not important to me. I also looked at the Ohlins for my KTM, but ended up going with the Scotts undermount as the KTM bars are too low and the rise is good. The decision is - is $200 more for the Ohlins worth not raising the bars with the possibilty of having to spend $80 on new bars to compensate with the Scotts, so net difference maybe $120 if you like the stock bars which most don't anyways.

Also when I looked at the Ohlins for my KTM, I was told I would have to pop out the top steering stem bearing race to install the Ohlins - I don't know what the install process is on the YZ. The Ohlins unit probably looks a little cleaner in a beauty contest, but I have been running with Scotts for 7 years so I am staying with what I know.

I ran the fender mount on my CRF, and plan to buy the mount for my 09 YZF sometime in the next week or two (depending on funds). I love it, don't even know it is there.

Do you have to cut the fender or front plate to use this mount? Where oh where do the pros hide theirs?

Thanks Gray. I noticed thumpdaddy650 uses the under bar system and has spent extra on new bars. Do you know if you also have to get risers for the mounts? Seems like the price will start to level if you need new bars and a riser mount. The fender system is also looking appealing. Anybody know if it costs extra?

The risers necessary for the SUB mount kit are a part of the kit, nothing extra to buy.

The low mount is only a few dollars more than SUB mount.

I thought the ohlins sucked donkey doodles and removed it and sold it.. Next damper will be a WER under my headlight. No free play in them and one way damping and well out of the way of your bars.

Another one to look at is the Motosportz which is $400. Good feedback from TTers, however it is not free to center like the Scotts. Do a search on it or check out www.motosportz.com

What about the Ohlins sucked? You didn't mention any feedback on Scotts. Have you used the WER and why is it the best? Thanks

That's the Low Mount. The name SUB Mount is an acronym for Stabilizer Under Bars.
Alright, I've decided to go for the Scott, above bar mount.?
That's what I run. Don't expect to be wowed by th effect of the damper immediately. You will eventually notice that the bike is subtly more settled, and you feel more relaxed and confident on it. If you want be impressed, ride with it for a month, then take it off.

i have the scotts sub mount on my 08 yz450 and love it. it does raise the bars a lot though. i also have the carmicheal bars. my friend has the ohlin i have ridden both our bikes back to back and like my scotts better. the ohlins always has drag that you have to work against when turning. unlike the scotts which can be turned down, but still has the high speed damping if u hit a root or braking bump etc. i dont like the stiff feeling of the ohlins personally. my friend loves his ohlins and does like my scotts. different strokes for different folks i guess.
