Ok guys so my topend is toast needs to be replated whole deal. My question is the guy I bought the bike from says its probably time for a new crank. I am considering doing it for preventative maintenance.

So my question is do I just need to replace the crank and rod bearings or will I likely need a whole new crank? What would you guys do? The bike is an '04 with a lot of use but well maintained.

What makes you think you need a new crank or rod? did it have a rattle issue? Does the big end rod bearing have up and down play? Does the small end have wear and gaulling?

If you are going to do it, replace the main bearings and do a complete crank kit, no sense in buying a rod and then having to pay a shop to split the crank to put the rod in...

If you buy just the parts needed to rebuild the crank, it's significantly cheaper than a whole crank. Trouble is, after you pay for labor to have the press and alignment work done, the cost is the same or higher than a whole crank.
