I just picked up a 2003 WR450 that had a bit of a fuel leak when I bought it. after getting it home to troubleshoot it, I figured out that I have fluidyne radiators and a tank from a 2005 WR according to the markings on it. the 05 tank (2.6 gal) was not a good combination with the aftermarket radiators since it was melted on both sides, obviously creating a fuel leakage problem.

so I purchased a 2003 tank (2.1 gal) which fits a nice distance away from my radiators. the problem is my radiator shrouds don't fit the 03 tank properly, nor does my seat.

so my question is, are the seats and shrouds from an 03 different from other years? I'm just curious for an answer on here first before I go searching for replacements that may or may not fit properly.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like you have a tank from a YZ, maybe someone else will back this up but I'm 99% sure the YZ shrouds are different from the WR shrouds of those years.

'03-'04 WR tanks have a capacity around 3 gallons and are noticeably larger than a YZ tank of the same years, the '05 WR tank was slightly smaller than the '03-04 tanks also.

If anyone gets a second when you have your tank off, would you look on the bottom of it and let me know the code that is molded into it? That is for anyone with an OEM tank. When I get home, I'll post up what my old melted one is and what the current one is.

Thanks in advance.

FYI, the numbers I was referring to are on the top of the tank, right behind the post the seat fits into; so there is no need to take the tank off.

The tank that came on the bike that was melted by the radiators has 5TJ on it, which is what the manual that came with the bike has on the lower right hand corner of the cover (it doesn't indicate a year though on the cover).

The tank I bought that was supposed to be for a WR450 has 5TJ8 on it, which a google search yields a .pdf for a parts catalog for a 2005 WR450. manual.

So, I think the 03 and 04 WR450's were the same. Did the tanks get smaller for 05?

I would really appreciate any help from folks that don't mind taking their seat off and checking the markings.

Last question, is there a decent possibility for repairing a melted tank? These seem kinda hard to come by lately.

Thanks

[COLOR="Green"]I used a 2.9 gallon YZ tank on my WR. Its a o4 so I needed YZ shrouds but I got a translucent one so I could see the fuel level much easier.

2003/2004 FUEL TANK 5TJ-24110-50-00
2005 FUEL TANK 5TJ-24110-80-00

It was my understanding that the 2003 and 2004 tanks were bigger than the 2005.

yup, that is the case. still looking for a tank from an 03/04 if anyone has one. I'm starting to work with the guy I bought the 05/06 from to return it since his auction was incorrect.

The 05/06 tank is 2.1 gal and will fit with no problems on the 03/04 WR but you will need 03-05 YZ shrouds or 05/06 WR shrouds. Also the 05/06 tank requires an 05/06 seat as well. IMO ergonomically it's a much nicer tank/seat combo if you don't need the extra capacity. The 03/04 tank is 2.6 gal. I've run an 05 tank on my 04 for several years and never had any melting problem or any other issue with it. Are you sure that's your problem? If you decide that you want to go with the 03/04 tank I probably have one in my garage that I'd let go. PM me.

from what I can tell, your response is dead on. my bike is an 03 with the 03/04 tank. the problem was caused by the previous owner adding fluidyne radiators, which made for a tight squeeze and melted a hole in the left side of the tank and started to do the same on the right side, but it just didn't make it through.

I bought a tank of ebay that was advertised as being for 03-06. just like you said, it fit, but the shrouds and seat were off a bit. since I'd rather not buy new shrouds and seat, I'd love to get my hands on a 03/04 tank (with some heat tape this time); so expect a PM in the coming minutes  :busted:

Hi I have a 2001 WR426 i think that might have the yZ tank on it looking at photos on the net the WR had a bigger tank which means you have to have have seat with more of a curve on it . The YZ plastics look far better but the tank is only around 7 ltrs.
