Turn signals and the law / consequences

Ok, so when I first got my wrr I purchased it with the intentions of doing mostly off road and fire road. The first day out I had a bad crash and ripped off one of the turn signals. Since then I have removed the other three without replacing them.

Now I am planning on commuting some with the bike, I am wondering 1) will a cop actually pull me over for not having them or is it more of a if i'm an a$$ to the cop if he pulls me over for something else he'll throw in the no turn signal ticket. 2) Is it like a no front license plate ticket for a car or does it have a heftier fine.

Pretty much only wondering about california law.

fix it ticket, if that is all he finds... I have bikes without them, and never been pulled over... I have other bikes "with" them, but they don't work

I guess I'm a scofflaw... I AM kind of partial to a brake light, though

thanks, fix-it ticket isn't that bad. Maybe at some point I'll stick some sort of blinker on, butnot right now.

I do have a brake light / running tail light. I wouldn't ride on the street without.

Yes you can get away with it but...

one of the things I was taught in my MSF course is how important it is for a motorcycle rider to make clear their intentions to traffic around them and I think that blinkers are necessary for that so I would not commute without them.

If you just got your WRR you need handguards anyway just get the Zeta's with flashers and the DRC rear kit or something some options are pretty economical

in washington you don't have to have signals provided you only ride during daylight hours. my v-twin doesn't have signals, but it's purely a fun bike for around town. makes sense, if it's dark you can't see my hands signaling a lane change.

I did not just get the bike. I had it since march 08. Already have hand guards and I don't like the ones with built in signals.

First off let me say I know nothing about traffic laws in your state, so I'm just spouting opinions and make no claims that they're more or less accurate than any other person's opinion.
But I would recommend you look into some small aftermarket blinkers for a few reasons.

1) Why give a cop a reason to get you onto the side of the road. I'm sure we've all run across the ones who are just looking for an excuse. You could be riding right NEXT to a cruiser bike with no signals and they would pull you over first because they are looking twice because your bike doesn't "look" legal at first glance.

2) Even if it is a "fix-it" ticket for no signals, what if the cop initially pulled you over for something else (lets say speeding because we all do it) and just uses that to pile on additional citations. He could go after you for speeding, failing to signal, no signals on the bike and so on. Sure it's an a-hole move, but he (or she) wouldn't be the first cop to do it.

3) Whatever your reasons for not wanting the signals (durability off-road, weight, cost, looks) they're all minor compared to your safety. You said you're commuting on the bike now. I don't know how far your commute is, or what the traffic conditions are like, but I would imagine that you're risk is reduced by having signals on the bike. Even if you're reducing that risk by just a little bit then it would seem worth it to me.

i have some $15 a pair ebay specials on the front (incandescent little ones) and these- http://www.motosport...atalogId=104020 - and might i say they are the sheet. only thing i had to do was file out the plate holes to show my regestration sticker and one of the numbers.

small, hard to rip off or break. keep you safe from the cages and rosco.

In cali you could get away without for a little while, but I would definitely put them on for all the reasons here. And if you're commuting, the time will come when you're commuting in the dark...:eek:or rain for that matter. And you really don't want to be caught without them then. :thumbsup:

Thanks for all the input. They will eventually go back on (in the next week or so).

I understand the safety aspect of it, I also find it funny that where I live I would guess only about 5% of the time I see people CORRECTLY using their signals (cars and bikes) and when people do use them, they either are ignored by other drivers or other drivers speed up to not let them merge. For this reason I tend to use big arm signals, not just hand signals. If I find someone isn't paying attention I tend to stand and that usually helps.

Another thing you can do to get rid of those license plate holders (because if your like me, you hate them more than anything in the world) is take the plate and mount it long ways underneath the rear fender so it can be seen above the tire and not platic your bike up! :thumbsup:

I had the SMs sold in the stores idk why. I just can't stand all that stuff on a dirtbike. Like the CRF230L. My friend just got one, yuck!

I would do it, not just because it is the law, it is safer. The stock ones on my CRF230L might be a bit bulky and ugly, but so far are unbreakable. I have dropped, wrecked and launched my 230L in the desert and they look as good as new. My advice Get them. I have enough mods on my bike as it is, do not need to give anyone more fuel. Many of us here who have have dual sports that may have plates, but we know they are not really street legal any more.

i opted for the intergrated tail light directional, in blue, for an 02-03 r1. clean nothing hanging out, fullfills the letter of the law and looks cool as hell ta boot!

I am pretty sure in California blue lights of any kind are a bike no-no. only Police can have blue lights.

well the lights them selves at the traditional red and amber, only the lens is tinted yamablue, but that only works in the rest of the free world not the peoples repulik of kalifornia

You need turn signals in michigan....the law conflicts itself here, "allowing" hand signals, and then REQUIRING turn signals.

I'm a cop in Royal Oak, and I stop for this all the time.

you dont need turn signals on a bike or motocycle they are not required by law to be be on the road legally
