After letting bike warm up, and when pull in clutch and drop into gear the bike will die. Does this have something to do with the clutch protection circuit.
It will only do this once, then good for a long time again. Usually only happens after sitting for a while(week or so)
I could not get it going today, tried about 15 times. So I started running down the street and dropped it into 1st and then I had no problems starting and stopping all the way to work
What could this be???:banghead:

is the clutch cable adjusted right? the gear shouldn't be engaging if the clutch is in and adjusted correctly.

Is your kickstand switch working properly?

Did you have the kickstand down when you were having problems ?

Seems like it since it worked when you went down the street.

Bike is made to shut off if you put it in gear with kickstand down.

Remove kickstand safety switch - it causes other problems too.

good point! i didn't even think of that because mine has been removed for so long.

that could definately cause this problem.

There are three kinds of DRZ's.

Those with kickstand switches and those without.

I have removed the kickstand safety, The bike stalls when i pull the clutch in and put it into gear, it stalls instantley like I hit the kill switch. The bike starts fine every time, so I dont think it is the battery either.
If I do the clutch safety switch bypass like talked about on TT then that would rule that problem out, would it not?
then if the bike still stalls I have more issues
BTW, I jogged with the bike running and then put it into gear, that way i didnt need the clutch.

Seriously check fix on the kickstand switch, cause it sure sounds like the circuit is no longer closed..

+1 on that. If the jumper wire came loose, it will act as if the kickstand is down.

THis is why, you ALWAYS solder your connections and use shrink wrap, if in fack the KS bypoass failed. If it is in good shape, then it is either a bad wire in the harness or a failing interlock relay. You did not splice in a different signal flasher relay recentlY?

It happened again this morning. Heres how it happens:

Start bike and let it warm up.
Put up kickstand.
Pull in clutch, and put into gear- bike shuts off
While in gear, bike wont start, put in neutral, bike starts fine.
Same thing happens all over again...did it about 4 times today, and finally worked and I rode to work.

When it doesnt do it, I can shut the bike off in gear, and restart it in gear...whats with that? I will check the kickstand connection, but I soldered those two wires together, so shouldnt be there.,

***Only happens in mornings, I can ride to work, doesnt do it at intersections, park at work and not start it for 10hrs, and then jump on after work and ride home with no problem***

Could this be the clutch switch doing this?

Did not put any signal light relays in, and what is the interlock relay?

you have a bad conenction on the side stand circuit.

you can eliminate your whole headache by grounding the green wire in the big plug at the cdi.

have you done any clutch work lately how about a oil change My first MC about 40 years ago after installing a barnet race clutch did the same thing after sitting for a longer time the extra longstrong clutch springsforced the clutch plates together enough so when the clutch was pulled the plates stuck together this was worse when cold simple to live with 1 before starting drop in gear pull in clutch and role bake and forth a couple a couple of times this breaks the clutch loose OR 2 start motor let warm aply breaks pull in the clutch rev motor drop in gear however the real fix might just be a good oil change

Bike has just 2,000kms on it, I do oil changes every 500kms since new, just because I ride only about 20kms per day. Have not done any clutch work as it doesn't need it.

Thanks Eddie, will definitely ground that out tonight. These electrical safety switches get worse and worse every year. On the John Deere construction equipment, we take training on electrical systems every 6-8 months as stuff gets more technical and complicated

Did you do something like pull ignition power from the neutral indicator light or something ?

Did you do any wiring lately or anything else ? My father always asked me "what did you do to it last?" when i had a problem.

Did Eddies recommendation work ?
