getting back into riding in the last few months. building up speed on some local trails, but the ruts always slow me down- to a crawl. is there a technique to move quicker through them?

Go around them! Ruts suck. And can be scary! Especially at speed. I try to stay loose on the handlebars and let the rut direct the bike through. Which sometimes works.

Pick the rut which brings you to where you want to end up, be patient, look ahead - feather the clutch through it with ~1/4 throttle.
Ruts suck.

it depends on the rut. a muddy rut should be avoided at all costs. a harder worn in rut will depend on how deep it is and such. every rut takes a different approach. i would say just keep riding through them and experience will teach you what you need to do.

without seeing the exact rut you are talking about any advice would be like judging an art show in the dark.

Really fresh tires with sharp knobs help out a lot in ruts........helps you change lines when necessary.

yes, right before my friends call an ambulance!

seriously though, if the ruts aren't too deep or crooked i might but being on one wheel through ruts can get hairy.

yah, ive eaten dirt on too many occasions trying to get through ruts. ive read that you want to let the bike "move" underneath you and not fight the front wheel

this is true, you just have to be careful that it doesn't "move" out from under you.

That's a very considerate riding partner there! We used a similar strategy back in my Army days - push a private onto the barbed wire and use him for a bridge. I hated being a private!

seriously though, keep your privates off of the barbed wire.... that never ends well.

I tell ya, it amazes me how good MX racers are after seeing how rutted-up a track gets.

Did anyone see Ryan Dungy cross-rut at last weeks' 250 national race ?

He cross-rutted at about 45 mph. He tank slapped and his feet flew up near the seat then he had to hammer the front brake to avoid hitting another rider and the bike did a forward flip slamming him on his back - he picked it up running and kept going.

Ruts SUCK.

yeah he got pancaked pretty bad on that one. for the situation i think he handled it pretty well.

i'm getting pretty excited to see them all ride live and in person this weekend.
