I just bought an 05 drz sm. It has full yoshi exhaust, 3x3 air box mod, and k&N filter. The guy I bought it from says it has a stage "3" jet kit..??.. He didnt seem to know what he was talking about..
Anyway, it runs like a turd, barley lifts the front wheel in first, then starts to break up about mid throttle to high rpm.I tried adjusting the fuel screw and it does not seem to make any differance to how the bike idles or runs.( It's not an extended screw ) I also pulled the slide and it Does have an aftermarket needle in it. I dont know the brand, but its on the 3rd clip ( the needle is not colored either ) .. I finally pulled the bowl and found a 140 main, 22.5 pilot and the other jet ( not sure what it is ) looks something like 62.5..

What kind of jet kit do I have?
What size jets should I buy to make it run correctly ?( I think its lean )
And should I be able to get jets at my local Bike shop?

I am in florida so I am at sea level..
Thanks in advance! :worthy:

3rd from top.. I did change it to 4th from the top. Seemed to run equally bad.. So I put it back to the 3rd clip.

its most likely a dynojet stg 1 kit for a S model.

clip 4 with a 150 main jet should get it better.

other wise, its not really the right kit.youd be better off starting over with a JD kit so you know what you have.

Thanks Eddie!
Now If I go to my local bike shop and ask for a 150 Main jet does it have to be from a dynojet kit or can it be a factory jet?

The dynojet and james dean use different numbers than stock. 150 should be factory main jet......

The jet is a jet. The kits are all about the needle... a 150 main for the stock carb will is what you need.

If your "fix" doesn't work than it would be wise to always start with a clean carb since you purchased used. Take the carb off the bike and remove all the jets, needle ect. and blow out all the small ports. One small clog and your no amount of jetting will cure all the issues. Just my 2 cents. Cheers

Different brand jets sold separately or included in kits are not all the same. Kehien jet scale is by actual hole size, while Mikuni's are flow rated to CC's per minute. When you go back and forth to all the various jets out there you will be screwed. The worst jets are the ones that only have a size on them and no way to tell where they came from. I have also seen customers go to a dealership serv. dept. and some mech. will pull a jet out of a dirty box and sell it,I later found that the jet had been drilled !!!!!!!! Buy genuine carb parts.

I would like to start off by saying I am in no way disagreeing with Eddie. Afterall, he is the one who helped me with my jetting. That being said...I live at sea level, I have the EXACT same set up as you except mine is a 2006 SM. I have full yoshi exhaust, 3x3, K&N, and a Dynojet kit installed in my carb. I am running the 160 main in mine and it runs damn near perfect. Try the 150, if that doesn't work, try the 155, then go to 160 if you need to. It's been awhile since I have been in my carb so I can't remember what the needle position is (need to start writing this stuff down, lol).

When I was running your guys' exact set up, I found the 155 to be dead nuts here in Indy at 843 ft. MSL.

you can not compare the 2 different dynojet needles when it comes to main jet.

if he has the S model stg 1 kit they use smaller main jets than the SM stg 1/2 needle.

the S needle has way more taper and much smaller end demension.

Doh! My bad, I forgot the S vs the SM jet kit are totally different...Even after you stated it in this thread, lol.

Listen to Eddie, get the right jet kit. You'll be pleased.

OK heres the story, Ended up getting 152.5 main jet.. Its all the dealership had. Installed it with needle at 4th clip.. Ran ok, Def better than it used to!!.. Still had that mid range stumble.. Top end was ok. Then I decided to try 5th clip. This setting so far has been the best!.. It still had a ever so slight stumble so I tried one more thing.. I installed the exhaust spark arrester thing.. Now it runs smoothly through the whole range.. I would not say its running 100% ( in comparison riding my buddys drz ) but much better!..
I might try to go one size bigger on the main jet and back the clip to the 4th position. We'll see.. I dont want to spend much $$ on this thing, I plan on going FCR as soon as I have a few bucks..

tape off 1/4 of the intake hole.if it runs correctly needs more main jet.

is the intake hole exactly 3x3?

I would say the hole is as close to 3x3 as it gets.. I rode about 150 miles yesterday and it actually kept up with my buddys 100% stock drz.. I was happy.. Eddie, When I tape off 1/4 of the hole should I move the needle back to the 4th clip?
Thanks again for all the help !

Just to be sure I am correct, The big plastic washer and the thick metal washer goes under the needle clip and the skinny metal washer goes ontop of the clip then spring and retainer..
