Hey guys, quick question(s).

I just got a 16T driven CS for my 2008 DRZ400SM. I got a Zeta guard as well for it. Got the 30mm socket (which was what size I found from on here). I do have extra washers that go on that nut too.

Any tips or hints for removing it? I am asking because I don't know how tight it is on there right now or not, but I want to make sure I have the right tools before I go starting this whole project.

Also this "case saver". What exactly is it? Is it the brass colored piece I've seen on some pictures on here of the CS area? What exactly do I need to file down in order to make the 16t gear fit? I bought a driven CS because it was suggested over and over again as being the perfect size and having the least amount of fitting issues.

When I go to reinstall.........do I want to use Red or Blue Loctite? I won't be taking this off probably ever again unless something major happens to the motor.

Just looking for some answers to questions. I'm a newbie at this motorcycle thing but have managed to install the RS2 and rejet my carb by myself, along with wiring up full LEDS/Edge tail light so I'm all for tinkering. I just like to have what I need to have before I start (tools & knowledge) :)

Any tips or hints for removing it?----first stand on the rear brake pedal and with 30mm socket and long breaker bar loosen css nut.then you can soin it off with fingers. I am asking because I don't know how tight it is on there right now or not, but I want to make sure I have the right tools before I go starting this whole project.

Also this "case saver". What exactly is it?----it minimizes damage to the crankcase if the drive chain breaks and bunches up against the motor...in theory. Is it the brass colored piece I've seen on some pictures on here of the CS area?---Yes. What exactly do I need to file down in order to make the 16t gear fit?----it will become very obvious when you reinstall it after putting on your 16t css. I bought a driven CS because it was suggested over and over again as being the perfect size and having the least amount of fitting issues.

When I go to reinstall.........do I want to use Red or Blue Loctite?----#271 Red,4 small drops on the end of the splines and 3 small drops on the nut threads, evenly spaced. I won't be taking this off probably ever again unless something major happens to the motor.-----or if the chain and css wear out.never say never.

good luck with your install.

Trans in N, rear brake on, fold the lock washer down, remove nut… If loose already, read the FAQ about the loctite fix and why. If tight, a long breaker bar and a buddy to hold the bike up and the brake on should work. An impact is the better tool. READ the FAQ write up on the loctite fix.. did I mention that?

Yes it's the brass colored item..The case saver is the metal part, half moon shaped piece inside the plastic sprocket cover. It helps “save” the case if the chain comes loose from say a broken link. In reality, often it gets torn off in the process.. But it does help,, so use it. You can reinstall it without the plastic cover if you want to. Most do, it allows better cleaning and visibility of the sprocket and CS nut. To fit the larger sprocket, you have to increase the inside radius of the saver.. A round file, dremel and grinding bit or a carbide bur in an air grind works well.

I just did the Loctite fixes last weekend and here's my notes on what's missing from the FAQs tutorial:

1. You can remove and reinstall the (same size) sprocket without loosening the chain.

2. Have some Cotter Pins available if you loosen the rear wheel for chain adjustment.

3. Make sure your Torque Wrench is 1/2" drive for the 30mm socket or have an adapter.

4. It's easiest to ratchet strap the rear wheel solid against your truck's tire, a tree or lightpole for torqueing to 79.5 lb-ft.

5. Have the mentioned pulley extractor in case the sprocket is already loctited.

6. An impact wrench makes your life easier.

For the other Loctite fix:

1. Besides Allen wrench you'll need a 6mm Allen socket for proper torqueing of the clutch.

2. You'll need more than a bit of oil. I lost almost 2 quarts, don't know exactly 'cause I poured from a gallon container.

3. As mentioned you don't need to replace the gasket but you can do it for peace of mind along with the starter cap o-ring (on older bikes). When I removed mine it had already been re-used so I Three-Bonded it.

The white paper also does not say you need an air compressor for that air impact gun you are recommending should that be added also? Nor does it mention all kinds of hack short cuts one can take when doing this simple task.. It also fails to mention the need for a light pole or truck as a required tool for this job,, because they are not needed :p
No matter how something is written up, there is always someone who will find a way to screw it up, or decide a “needed” step is missing.
I do update the white papers when needed. Many have requested a change or addition and those have been done when they make sense for the group.
suggestions are welcome.. I'll update the write ups as needed.

Thanks:thumbsup:

Just so my comments don't get taken out of context: He asked for advice on having all the right tools so I'm just sharing my notes, I'm not criticyzing the writeup (whoever wrote it) and I'm not suggesting it should be updated. After all it's my first DRZ and I'm a fairly new member.

Pretty sure you said

what's missing from the FAQs tutorial:
Fairly sure I articulated why I thought most of what you said was missing was not there.
And I updated the FAQ with some of what you posted because I thought it would be useful to the group at large :applause:

As always, suggestions welcome :ride:
