I get a headache every time I go into my local bike dealership. They just don't like me anymore, after the sale.

I'm looking for oils I can buy at auto parts stores, hardware stores, etc.

Can anyone list one or two readily available oils that are a safe bet for the DRZ.

I'm at 1k still on regular oil but wouldn't mind switching to synthetic at this point.

I normally use Royal Purple full synthetic 20w50. They sell it at a few local auto parts stores and it goes for around $7-9 a qt.

Shell Rotella Synthetic.

You can get it at your local Wally-Mart.

LOL, William, I thought the same thing at first. I think he just wants to know which "decent" oils he can get without having to deal with the dealership. I myself HATE dealerships with a passion. On top of that, some of those places are charging up to $15 for one quart...$15!!!

Lucas synthetic for cycles - some auto places carry it.

I hear some ppl swear the Rotella works just as good but haven't got up the guts to try it yet

I buy Silkolene direct. Cheapest around (for this oil) and they deliver as much as I want for a flat $10 right to my door.

GO to the local Dealership support them, the dealership here just closed. Now I have to order oil filters on line. Can't just hop on the old drz ride to the dealership grab a filter ride and change the nice hot oil. Makes it super easy.

sorry that was my rant this sucks

Considering how often we change our oil, and as long as horsepower is not a category, virtually any modern era synthetic oil will work fine as long as its designed for bikes. This oil thing can go on for ever. We dont keep our oil in our Z's for 3,000 - 7,500 miles. Auto zone (indy area) has Mobile 1 20/50 full syn. racing oil with the 4T designation for $9.99 qt.

I totally disagree. I would much rather support a non-dealership motorcycle shop vs a dealer every time. It is very rare to find a dealership that actually cares, they are out there, just hard to find. Most times I have dealt with a dealership, I walk out beyond unhappy. One of our local dealers is notorious for having the worst service no matter what you go in for, parts, bikes, you name it.

Here is an idea, buy yourself a stainless steel filter that never needs replacing. Then you never have to buy another filter

Someone once posted that "it dosnt matter what oil (brand) you use, along as you change it often." I may disagree, but the truth is, most oils are much better quality now than they use to be. Just keep in mind, you must use an oil that is wet clutch compatable. And if you ride hard, CHANGE IT!! to get rid of the clutch fibers jammed in you filter.

For what its worth. I have independent, non biased laboratory test data that is documented, stamped, witnessed signed, validated to industry standards for a heads up oil test. The oils ranged from elcheapo plain jane standard types of valvoline, castrol, etc. then it went up to the mid class oils, some of these were the factory oils of yamaha, honda, suzuki etc; then all the way up to the exotics/racing synthetics which all were very expensive. In the exotic class entrants were mobil1, silkolene, royal purple, lucas, red-line, amsoil, etc etc. All oils were subjected to the same test under controlled conditions. There were about 20ish test. To make an already long story short, amsoil came out the winner. AND no I dont regularly use it.
