Oil coming out of the air cleaner

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and new to Dirt Riding. I just bought a an 08 WR450F here in Idaho. After picking it up i checked the oil and nothing registered on the dipstick. I told the dealership and they gave me some oil so i filled it up. I have taken it on 4 pretty good rides and after the ride yesterday i noticed i had oil on the left side of my swingarm. I started trying to trace the source and it is dripping out of my airbox. Any ideas on what could cause this? Could overfilling cause it? I think i might have over filled it a little and am hoping thats all it is cause my 30 day warranty just ran out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes overfilling will cause this to happen. You should really read the service manual and get familiar with the oil fill and level checking procedure. You need to run the bike for a few minutes and then check the level of the oil. Follow the guidelines and you should be OK.. Enjoy the new ride. :worthy: WR Dave

The oil leaking from the airbox is most likely coming from an over oiled air filter. Have you oiled the filter latley?

You need to check the engine oil level straight after the engine has been running. Once it has been sitting for a while you wont see anything on the dipstick even though it has the correct amount of oil in it.

No i havent oiled the filter lately. It was my fault because I didn't read the manual, i'm used to riding Harley's and assumed it was the same procedure. Thanks for the info guys. I am slowly learning how to do everything myself because i hate paying the stealership more money.

Maybe the dealer over oiled it. Check the dripped oil and see if it is filter oil or engine oil. Filter oil is very sticky but then again who knows what oil the dealer used. Check if there is any oil in the air tract between the filter and the carby. If there isnt then its only the filter oil dripping. I would say it is most likely coming from the filter though. Good luck anyway.
