Why is my '09 easier to start in neutral, especially when hot? Starting in gear with the clutch pulled always takes many kicks. Is this common or is it possible I have an adjustment issue with my clutch? Seems to be in perfect adjustment while riding.

there is no drag from the trans while in N...when in gear the clutch will always put a little drag on the crank even though you pull the lever in

It's quite common, even normal, partly for the reasons just given, and also partly because the timing is slightly more advanced at idle in neutral than when in gear.
